Something no one has mentioned regarding side shims - they need to be one piece! The kits I've seen come with stackable shims, although I have seen some that use a housing to contain the stacks. If you don't use a solid shim they can work out from under the bearing retainer and destroy your gears. The idea behind the stacks is to figure out what thickness you need and then order the correct single piece. Tooth pattern always needs to be checked before sending it down the road.

The new bearings are more of a CYA thing. The pinion bearing absolutely requires a press and bearing puller for removal to get to the shim and the side bearings don't have to come off. I've done literally hundreds of gear changes and they can be a challenge. A lot of those have also been re-dos of other shops work.

There are shim kits available that no longer use a crush sleeve, and I've only done that once. If you do use the sleeve, be very careful when tightening it. It takes LOTS of torgue to tighten and is junk if you go too far.

I have ordered the basic install kit made by Ford Racing. I am assuming that will have everything I need for this install.

I will run it by the mechanic who is going to be doing my install.

Not paranoid at all.....though I would be if I were doing the install myself , therefore I am definitely having an experienced shop do it I will follow their suggestions to use the basic kit....and definitely FRPP gears. Motive and Richmond gears are either the same price and on some sites are even more expensive. Cant figure that one out.

FRPP gears 99% of the time do not require reshimming. Richmond and other aftermarkets, will have to be reshimmed.

On the CJ Pony Parts website, they indicate that one of their gear sets is made for Ford by Motive. The rest of them are genuine FRPP gears.

i just had my gears done ...28k on the car...i had a buddy that has done many many ford gear swaps and he has had issues with the s197s he has done...something is just a little different that makes them real touchy when doing the pinion preload and shimming...its more sensative for some reason...he trusted the calculations on the pinion shimming and had to re do the job cuz i had a coast side whine...went with his gut the second time and it came out good...we used new bearings...we did have a clutch pak issue though with them making noises on low speed turns...i think it was due to using the lucas full syn oil additive instead of frict mod...i drained a little and put some trans x additive in it and it cut it almost out...gonna drain it soon and replace it with amsoil 75/140 and some ford additive...that should kill it all... MAKE SURE YOU GET THE FORD GEARS WITH THE "N" IN THE P/N...THE "M" GEARS ARE THE OLDER ONES THAT WERE MORE PRONE TO NOISE....

Anyone else have problems with these older gears with the "M" in the part number?
