Hi as I'm sure you gather from the topic title, I'm a little disturbed by the gas guzzling nature of my '05 GT... I have had a V8 Dodge Durango, V8 Grand Cherokee, V8 Navigator, and have driven countless of my parents and friends vehicles of similar nature and have NEVER experienced such horrific gas mileage. I LITERALLY fill up my mustang's tank, and it is at 3/4 tank by the time I get home, and 1/2 a day later. I've had my car roughly 3 weeks and have filled it up, I dont know, maybe 7 times... is that normal!? I don't do that much driving at all.... I absolutely love my car but I wanted to see if this is the same for other people or maybe there's something wrong with mine...

Part of your problem is the car is very new and also has only a sixteen gallon tank. The message center, I believe, starts telling you you're low with about three gallons left in the tank. If things don't improve after you've put some miles on it, a dealer visit would be in order.

My 05 GT gets about 11.8 mpg.
Then again i'm only averaging 19 mph according to the car's computer. I live in L.A. so i'm usually stuck in traffic.
I'm sure if I lived elsewhere I'd be getting 18 or 20 mpg.

I live in L.A. too and the traffic can be brutal depending on where you're located and where you're headed. Time of day can make a difference....sometimes. But there are lots of Sundays where the traffic is a mess also.

I have 3500Mi on my GT and I average 17.1 MPG most of the time. I commute about 33 Miles round trip to work and back (Virginia Beach - Norfolk Naval Station). The driving environment here could be considered a mix of urban and suburban (highway and surface streets)... For the first 500 miles or so I was only seeing mileage in the 12-13MPG range, once the engine loosened up mileage began to improve...

You just got the car, could it be the way you are driving it? My car was averaging around 16mpg when I got it. Once I learned the proper time to shift I got around 21-23 mpg. After installing a new air intake I average 26 mpg.

My mileage has averaged around 19mpg in combined highway and city driving. I have not taken the car on a long highway trip yet and it has only 2700 miles. My most recent tank was 20.7mpg, which is the best so far. My first tank was 18 mpg. I don't have the IUP, so no computer telling me what my mileage is...just old fashioned math.(more accurate)
I have found that the car will give better mileage when you short shift it. When I first got the car, I was reving every shift to at least 2500rpm because I love the sound of the engine and this motor feels so much smoother than previous mustangs. Now, I am short shifting and letting the torque of the engine do the work...trying not to rev past 2000rpm. It's tough to resist driving it harder, but that is what netted me over 20 mpg combined. The car is totally stock.
On a side note, this is my 8th fuel injected mustang, and they have all given essentially the same mileage, including my '01 Cobra (which took 91 octane). Pretty remarkable if you think about it. 20mpg, more power, lower emissions, 87 octane if you so choose...I love this car.
One other thing. I rarely use the Air conditioning because Seattle is so temperate. I do use the defrost/mix when it's raining. This runs the air automatically and have noticed the mileage goes down approximately 2mpg. Usually get betweeen 250-300 miles per tank before I fill up again. I would say you should be able to get at least 225 miles from a tank no matter how you drive it.

I was wondering, too, if I am shifting efficiently. Most shifts are around 2500.
On pure highway, I'm around 26 mpg - - as in fill it up on the highway, and cruise.

I'm gettin' right around 20 mpg around town. Back and forth to work, Indian River to Naval Base Norfolk. Road trips to NC I got 26.6 mpg doing 80-90 mph..... It does take a little bit for ya to see better gas milage.

I do all in town driving lots of stop and go, and my BEST mpg was 15.3. My average right now is about 12.4, do you think there is something wrong with her? It's an auto with 500 miles, and I am very gentle on the throttle.

I do mostly all city driving - the average speed usually shows 26-29 mph - and the average mpg is usually about 16. It does get 23-25 on the highway it looks like, but I've never really driven a full tank on the highway, so I'm just going by the message center. My best mpg so far has been 18.5 and the worst was 14.7 I think. 3100 miles on the car so far, and it's a 5-speed.
Overall that mpg seems about 1-2 mpg worse than my '95 5.0 GT. But of course the '95 GT was fully broken in, and I did use Mobil 1, which is supposed to increase the mpg a wee bit.

I doubt anything is wrong, just give it some time (miles) and after break-in, I am sure your mileage will improve significantly.
