FRPP motorsport gears stink!
#1
I will never use Ford Racing gears again! First set of gears were defective. They had a casting flaw in them. Now, I have 4.30's and broke them at launch. Busted a few teeth off. I will be going to Motive gears now. Very aggravating!
I guess the good thing here is that the rest of the driveline is holding up. Once I find gears, hopefully Motive, they'll hold up and then it's a matter of seeing what else is weak.

They are right. Those gears STINK! I'm just ticked right now. That's just one issue to go with the others. My suspension is still not right. I may need to relocate the LCA brackets. I also see that MMR now has a coilover. I'll be speaking with them on Monday! Once I get the car to transfer weight to the rear, I should get my times down a little more. I'm thinking of going to an electric water pump as well. After my last mods and dyno pull, I thought I was almost done...WRONG. Someone here did say to me that there will always be things to mod.

David;
Have you checked your differential alignment since the sport springs were installed?

darn. I wonder if the stock 3:55 gears stink too. I dont roast the balonies very often, but I want to feel confident that I wont break the rear end when I do.

ive been pretty hard on mine with no problems so far, the problems come in when you hook up, not from spinning

I trailered it down this morning. My buddy is very curious as to what is wrong. It really seems like the gears are gone, but when you drive it forward, you don't hear any consistant noise as if a tooth was missing. I had to use a cumalong to get it on the trailer. It would drive forward, but once I got to the trailer ramps, you could hear the gears slipping or jumping the teeth. Initiallly, we thought it was the axle, but after jacking it up, we couldn't get it to act as if the axle was busted. We'll see come Monday.

you are WRONG for that! lol. We haven't torn it apart yet and initially thought it was the gears. Then thought it may be the axles. I'm leaning towards my brand new Auburn Pro diff now being the culprit. I can actually drive it with out the consistant revolution/banging sound that a bad gear would make. 3 passes on the new diff. I think the spider gears are ate up. We'll see come Monday. I'm really not too sure what diff to go with. I've heard as many bad things about Eaton's as I've heard about Auburns (of course, after the fact). Some have mentioned Detroit EZ locker. I just don't want the clicking as I turn corners. Any suggestions....if it's actually my diff.

169Stang,
I think that is called libel. You make a post about how crappy FRPP gears are and then post later that you think it might be the diff instead. Maybe you need to pull the rear end apart and find out what actually broke BEFORE you start screaming about thow crappy this part or that part is.
Good luck getting to the bottom of the problem.

I would get someone who realy no,s what there doing on the install.Way to much damage going on here for a car that only runs high 12,s.Many other 05,s are running right into the 12,s and beyond with stock gears. If you leave the stock 3.55s you wont need to shift into fourth gear.
Thats worth some tenths.I noticed when I ran my car, I was shifting into fourth right at the Traps. That was at 6000 rpm so I wanted to make my next run and let it go right thru the Traps in 3rd, But ran out of time and have not run my 05 again yet.
If pinion angle,Gear mesh,Backlash and Preload are not set correctly gear failure is certain.

It's really difficult to know what really works when you hear so many different, opposing opinions about parts. I hear that Eatons really stink, and they are the best. MMR racing states they won't ever use Auburn again, but have been running a Detroit EZ Locker for some time. This isn't just off the wall opinions. These are people that run these particular makes in their cars. I'll be talking to DTS (Drive Train Specialist) to see what they recommend.
I didn't set the backlash myself, but was there and watched my buddy set it to .010(10-1000th's). I haven't been racing for X amount of years or even more than 1 year to know what products hold up the best. I don't have the experience to say, hey, this particular brand is not good. All I have is what I can learn from you guys here, racer's, mechanics and just people with experience in drive trains.

No, it's not libel when my first set of gears had a casting flaw in them. FRPP did give me another set of 4.10's when they have a 0 mile warranty due to the flaw. With a new diff. and a second set of gears, it sounded like the damage was in the gears. Yes, even now without knowing, have been premature in diagnosing the issue and premature in posting. It's just aggravating! I will know tomorrow. I'm sure you could understand my aggravation with another breakage. I'll be talking with some different people, manuf. and perf. shops to come to a conclusion.
