I'm sure those 3.73's really woke up that automatic!
I can tell you that the 4.10s wake up an automatic just as nicely, too!!

Update:

Stopped by and let my installer listen to the howl of my 4.10's, along with the resonance on decel from 60 to 50 mph.

After he confirmed that the noise and vibe actually exist, he got on the phone to Precision Gear. They suggested switching out the synthetic lube for conventional. Something about their gears having a coating that just doesn't work well with synthetic. Someone posted a while back about Ford switching back to regular lube recently. Can anyone confirm?

OK, now bear with me while I try to explain this part. I may botch some of the terminology.

He says when setting the backlash they were getting a variation of .003 when rotating the assembly, from say .007 to .010. This, he says, is caused by the carrier not being machined perfectly and causing the ring gear to wobble ever so slightly in relation to the pinion gear. He say sometimes you can get a different result by simply taking off the ring gear and bolting it back on in a different position. He also offered to get me a new set of gears and try it again, but he doesn't think this is the solution. He did vow to get to the bottom of it.

Isn't this the same tried and true rear that Ford has been using for years? Has Ford shafted us by obtaining parts from a cheaper vendors to keep pricing down?
It shouldn't be this hard. :bang:

I bought the used FRPP 4.10's from 169Stang, and will have them installed on Saturday 7/16. The guy doing the install is considered to be one of the authorities when it comes to installing gears in a Mustang. He's going to featured in an upcoming magazine article doing a gear install on an 05 Mustang GT. I will ask him about the different settings. He did recommend Mobil1 gear oil, 3 qts.

Dave,

I, and I'm sure many others, look forward to hearing anything he has to offer. Please keep us posted and good luck with your install.

My installer got the same answer to the Lube question. This came from Drivetrain Specialties(a big outfit) They also said to use conventional lube...we did...and no difference!!!! But the carrier thing sounds more like what i got going on!! I will see next week when he measures everything up...and will tell him about rotating gear on carrier and giving it a spin! Thanks for the reply...as for 4.10's...i believe they would be great in my auto. I like the 3.73's...but i can see room for more gear with no problems!!

I agree...i like the 3.73's...but i can see after driving it a bit now that there is plenty of room for more gear with no real issues! My tach only went up 260rpm! heck..500 would be no big deal!Maybe i'll switch ?

With the cruise control set at 80mph, I'm turning about 2750 rpms. On a nice flat stretch of interstate, I can still get 23-24 mpg (a little less with AC on).

Not with this car but another stang I had the same problem. Installed 3.73's and man they were loud. Same problem you guys are describing. I went to another shop (better one) and they said that when the other installer put everything together they crushed the pinion bearings (k, it has been 2 years since the work was done but I think that is what he said). He took the rear end apart, and reassembled it with new pinion bearings. No noise and no problems after that.
