Frpp Cams
#22
For those of us in HoustonNick at Fastlane (up on 1960, just off Jones Rd) is currently testing cams that don't require springs either. I think I'll get them for my car, together with Kooks headers and an Air Raid intake, CMDP's and UDPs. Since I'm at 285 now with just a drop-in K&N and a slightly leaner AFR, the UDP's should be good for 8 rwhp, the headers/intake combo for another 25 rwhp, the CMDP's for another 8 rwhp, and the cams for 20 rwhp, for a total of 346 rwhp...or over 400 flywheel hp N/A.
UDP's $300
Headers/intake $2000
CMDP's $200
Cams $XXX
400 hp NA with a lopey exhaust sound: PRICELESS!

I have a set of Comp XE262H cams in my 4.6 2V V8. They are the "no springs" required OE replacement cams. I can't complain about the quality, but I had to have a set replaced by Comp due to an issue where the cam lobes got chipped during transport at the manufacturing facility (They've fixed the problem with the process).

With full exhaust, the Comp Stage 4's didn't sound anything like that. Now they just need to make some that sound like that for the GT500.

Pardon my ignorance, but why would changing cams make a car not pass emissions? I would love to get the FRPP ones posted here, but if I can't pass inspection that would be a show stopper.

I think that A******hers is kicking in.
I told you it was 4 hours labor at $70 bucks an hour for install at Brenspeed. But I do agree if you go with the set that requires changing the springs you are looking at big bucks for maybe 10 hp. A total of $280 bucks plus the custom dyno tune of $200. Well worth it I think!

So like big bucks for 10 more RWHP over the NSR set?

how do these work with a supercharger? If I were to get these cams when they are out and then get a paxton installed what type of hp would I be looking at and would this be doable??

Overlap would be the big issue, if the cams caused the engine to pass some of the unburnt cylinder charge into the exhaust it would hurt the emmissons of the car - one of the big reasons why manufacturers have been really working on high flowing cylinderheads is the ability to build power while using milder camshafts. As you shift the powerband higher into the rev range, the cam tends to get more aggressive in terms of duration and overlap so that the engine can breathe easier at higher RPM.

Now then, huge performance gains won't really be realized with cams in a 3v motor. I spoke with the owner of a tuning shop here in Colorado, and he basically said that a better plan to get more bang for your buck is to install a supercharger. That said, I was looking at these cams more for the sound, not the performance. I really don't need a guh-zillion horsepower in a daily driver- I just want a sound that'll put a smile on my face whenever I start the car up. However, the point about emmissions testing is a good one, and living at high altitude like I do, cams could really screw up the air/fuel ratio in my car. I suspect you guys at sea level would have a much easier time with these...and I envy you.
I'm still salivating over the sound, I think they beat out the comparable Blow-By Racing cams, especially since these are in-house Ford cams.
Not 100% certain if it would be feasible, but I'd still love a set of these, if only for the sound.
