Front Suspension Popping TSB
#1
Sorry if someone has posted this elsewhere on here, didn't see it.
For all of us suffering the popping in the front suspension, Ford had released a new TSB as of yesterday addressing the issue. Got this from a Ford tech on another site.
TSB
05-9-11 FRONT SUSPENSION POPPING NOISE WHILE TURNING RIGHT OR LEFT - VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE 4/8/2005
Publication Date: April 27, 2005
FORD: 2005 Mustang
ISSUE:
Some 2005 Mustang vehicles built before 4/8/2005 may exhibit an intermittent popping noise from the front of the vehicle while turning left or right. The noise will typically occur during low speed maneuvers and may occur multiple times while turning.
ACTION:
On both sides of the vehicle, install a revised upper strut bearing assembly. If the vehicle was built before February, 2005 it may also be necessary to install a lower spring seat isolator if one is not already present. Refer to the following Service Procedure

I knew there would be more to this than just the Strut Bearings! I will check tommorrow and see if the Isolators are readily available as well as current status on the bearings! I will also see if there is a Good Pic of the isolator so you can check for yourself if they are there!

I thought everyone was crazy or just paranoid but I felt and heard this for the first time today, I jacked up my car on stands and tested everything. I noticed that with the lowering springs and the suspension unloaded in the front that you can turn the springs in their seat about 1/4 turn each by hand!

My parts are on order right now! THANKS FOR POSTING THIS!
Since there's a fix for it, I have a little story to share:
I took my car in for the Gas tank replacement, and noted the floor vent and popping issues on the work order.
When I went to pick it up, the tech said he couldn't hear any popping and that they'd have to wait for the floor vent fix to be issued.
I asked the service manager to ride around with me for a bit because I would definitely show him the popping noise. After tooling around in the parking lot and taking a short ride up and down a nearby road, that car didn't pop ONE TIME. We pulled back into the service bay and I I told the SM I'd just wait for the TSB. He got out of the car and as I backed out of the bay..."POP POP POP POP!" The SM was back at his desk. I rolled the window down and asked if he heard it. Of course he didn't. He came back to the car and I said I would get it to POP again. I moved forward and backward as the SM holds his head near the front fender (as if that would be required once it popped)....SILENCE. Arrggggg. This thing sounds like a bowl of popcorn once it cuts loose and starts popping. Anyway, he leaves the side of the car again and I back out of the bay....POP POP POP POP POP! :bang: I just kept going.
I called my wife on the way home to tell her the story. She gave me the female perspective. Apparently my car was a little pissed that I left her somewhere overnight and that I let other men 'drive her'. Evidently the car did not want to stay at the dealer overnight again and wanted to go home reminding me all the while (via popping) who was actually in-charge.
Made sense to me. I guess the discussion with the car now has to end just like those with the wife.... :worship: "Yes Dear"
All this time I thought I had a new girlfriend, not another wife

Just curious about your floor vent issue. What is the issue?
Reason I ask is, there is someone on another board that has been battling with Ford over his heater vent in the floor not working, and the service manager let him sit in on a speaker phone conversation with a Ford rep, without the rep knowing he was there. The rep told the service manager to tell the guy that it was normal operation. When the service manager asked the rep if he really believed that, the rep said "No, but we don't know how to fix it, so tell him it is normal".
All of that happened with the guy sitting right there listening!

When I put the vent selector **** on the Floor position, air comes out the windshield vent. I haven't checked to see if it actually comes out of the floor too, but my dealer acknowledges that it's not supposed to work that way. I told them for that issue I'm happy to wait for a Ford issue fix, no rush.
The popping and gas tank issues had to be resolved though. I'm just happy they finally issued a TSB for the popping. I've got 2.9 years for them to figure the vent thing out, and I'm ok waiting on that one.

I hear ya.. for the 5 days a year I might use the heater, I truly don't care that much about the vent issue. I can certainly wait. But that front end popping was driving me crazy. Nothing like having a new $30K car that sounds like it is already falling apart. Mine is hitting the shop on the way to work in the morning for the parts ordering.

Twice I have had mine to the dealer and could not get it to pop either!!!
When it does, it does it a lot! Drive to dealer, park, go in hassle them to come out, no pop! Done that twice to them. "It was doing it earlier" :bang:

SAME ISSUE!! I had posted a few months ago about what issues I was having with my stang and these three are the main culprits....the fuel filling problem, the constant popping noises and last but-not-least the heater issue where (in full floor mode) it blows 3/4 out the center defrost vent and only 1/4 out the floor vents.....I may just live with the vent issue as in Cali - we don't use heaters too much and I can't stand the though of my dash being torn apart to find/fix this issue.......
Actually good to hear that others are having this issue as well - hopefully enough of us will report it that Ford will fix - like the popping noise....

Right-on Hotlap. I'm sure Ford isn't issuing TSB's out of good will. There have to be enough people complaining. Thankfully we have awesome collaborative environments like this forum to share information.
I wonder how many Ford HQ people/engineers/marketing read these forums?
I have to say though, I don't consider any of these issues serious. So long as Ford acknowledges them, works on corrective measures and honors their warranty, I'm a happy camper. For a first year car, I think they did a pretty good job. I haven't enjoyed driving this much since I got my motorcycle.

Recalls are only for safety issues. Everything else get's TSB's.

It's about time they came out with a fix. That noise has been driving me insane, I hear it every day going in and out of the driveway. Time to fix that along with the Shaker stereo and one other issue I've noticed. My rear axle has a faint whine at higher speeds, there's a TSB for installing a damper kit on it. I'll see about taking care of that at the same time.

Get you name in the Hat! Parts are in transit but there are some backorders! The sleeve would be where indicated on Pic. ALL Attaching hardware is replaced! Sleeve installed if not present! If your car is not popping do not assume this needs to be done! It is not required on all cars! Cars built after 04/08/05 should have updated parts on them already!
