Just picked up my 08 GT/CS, the owners manual says the first oil change is at..... 12,000km ?! Is this right, I have never gone over 5000km without a change.

That is equivalent to 7,500 miles, and yes that is correct. Ford changed the recommendations sometime in 2007 from 5K to 7.5K miles for normal service. As long as you drive the car a decent distance almost every time, you will be fine with that interval. Also make sure you use the Motorcraft oil, or any brand name Fully Synthetic oil. Don't cheap out and go with a conventional oil. Conventional oil will not last as long and will need to be changed out sooner. It will protect just fine, and perform great...just not as long as synthetic. That is a big reason the oil change intervals were raised, the oils are so much better today than they were years ago. Also, the modern engine is much different than they used to be. They run so much cleaner, and are much easier on oil than the old engines were.

Danger, Danger Will Robinson,

The engine is equipped with Motorcraft 5w20 semi- synthetic blend, this is not a 100% synthetic oil.

While several oil test sites state that it will go 7500 miles between oil & filter changes, IMPO do not do this.

I will post more later , concerning a lawsuit between a customer and a
oil change/ oil manufacturer that I'm currently involved in.

So, TDS...you are saying the Ford recommended service schedule is wrong and we should not abide by it? Because 7,500 miles is what they recommend for normal service for the 2008's. Severe service is recommended to be changed at 5,000 miles. Severe service is considered extensive idling, dusty/dirty conditions, towing, or off road operations. Most Mustangs do not fit that description.

Go with the recommended service interval

I have been following the the service guide for over 20 years and about 6 ford and 2 chevy vehicles. With the standars warranty your stock mustang will do fine with what the service manual states.

Ford has increased the service interval to 7500 on the 2008 models, part of the cheaper to "own" and "maintain" campaign.

If "they" meaning Ford, will stand behind this interval on their 5w20 semi-synthetic formula oil, then by all means go for it.

I am speaking from years of experience in the oil business, the automotive business, both as a tech and a service manager, and a 4 year degree in chemical engineering.

This is MY opinion, not Fords or anyone else's, but my personal experiences, from an oil related problem in a 2004 F-150 4.6, under warranty speaks for it self.

If I can be of any help, ask,

Thanks,

TDS

My 06 GT I did the 1st oil change at 900 miles and went full synthetic, hearing that Mobil 1 was supposed to be the best I went with that. Then I noticed that every once in awhile that I would get a puff of Blue smoke during start, so went back to motorcraft 5-20w syn blend and no more blue smoke on start.
Mobil 1 is no longer all its said to be in my mind, staying with motorcraft semi synthetic.

I do not understand, I must have gotten a special deal. When I bought my 07, I got, as part of the warranty, free oil changes by Ford for the entire warranty, at no additional cost. The only thing that I did not like is that Ford says that the oil change is every 5000mi, so I had mine changed at 3000mi. just before I put in the back of the garage for it's winter nap. I have always been told to change the oil in an engine before storing it for the winter.

I used Quaker State High RPM 5w-30w in my 4.0L. I tend to change it every 4000 kilometers (2500 miles). I don't think for has any additives in the factory oil. Quaker High RPM is a synthetic blend.

What makes you think the oil from the factory doesn't have any additives? Of course it has additives, it is Motorcraft Semi-Synthetic oil, same as what you would buy at any auto parts store, or Wal-Mart. If it didn't have any additives, it would be just like the oil that was used in cars of the 1910's.

Oh, and unless you drive the car severely, 2,500 miles is a waste of good oil. It's not even halfway worn out yet. But hey, whatever floats your boat man.

If you want to get lots of miles out of your engine, I would stick with 3000 miles or 3 months. Highway miles count as about half when it comes to breaking down all the additives in the oil but severe driving, stop and go driving, short trips, etc... are very hard on your engines oil. It's kind of personal preference and opinions from there on.
