Should I stick with 5w20 or use 5w 30?? I live in florida and have a gt vert with 1000 miles
Personally, I believe in using what the manufacturer recommends (Mazda also recommends 5W20). I live in a hot climate (Southeast Texas) and I've been using 5W20 @ 5,000 mile intervals and haven't had an issue (currently @ 33K on the odo). My advice is to do what feels right for you. If you don't feel good about 5W20 at an extended interval, then don't do it! It's your car and money after all.

You are correct.
But, like others, it's cheap insurance and I like to get under her as often as I can.

Question for you folks, based on what I read on this forum Motorcraft Syntetic Blend oil is not a Full Syntetic oil ?

If I want to go full syntetic, do I just do an oil change with the new oil or do I have someting special to do ?

I have a V6 and live in Canada, so weather is not that hot, so should I stick to 5W20 or can I go to 5W30 since it's easier to find in syntetic blend.

Thanks,

No, the Motorcraft isn't a full synthetic. That's why it's labeled as a synthetic blend.

The oil specified for the V6 is 5W30, not 5W20 (that's for the V8).

The dealer put 5W30 in your GT? I would have thought they'd have put 5W20 in it.

Maybe i'm to old school .... but i think 5-20 is to thin. The Acura dealer across the street that i take my g/fs 04 MDX in for oil changes uses 5-30 also. I think all Hondas and Acuras call for 5-20 ... but they put in 5-30. At this point i'm just glad the FRIGGEN noise is gone. I'ts really up setting to come out in the morning and start up your pride and joy, and have it sound like a Kenworth truck.

That's cool that they'll do that. I'm just a little surprised that they'll vary from the factory recommendation.

The Royal Purple is 99% of your problem.
Take the thing back and get it fixed and start using good oil.
You'll be happier in the long run.

What's wrong with Royal Purple? Did you have a bad experience?

i have to agree with you - i've been digging around and i think that the more i read, the more i think 5w20 is garbage for protection. apparently it's a 'fuel economy' oil...i'd rather do what the experts say to protect my baby then blindly follow the factory, unless there's good reason to do so.

I'm playing devil's advocate: if what you say is true (it's a fuel economy oil), then why would both Honda and Toyota, neither of which have a problem meeting CAFE requirements with all the 4 cylinders they sell, also specify 5W20 and run the risk of reduced engine life?

First oil change over the weekend - 3050 miles - 5W20 Amsoil (Synthetic).

The filter was a real bear to remove.

Decided to put her away for the winter.

Suffering Mustang separation anxiety now...

That would fly in the face of their "superior quality" image, wouldn't it?

That's the other way around for me, I have a V6 and my dealer always put 5W20 where the Ownerr's manual says 5W30 for V6's.

If they recommend 5W30 and the dealer puts 5W20 it may be too thin ?

You should not switch to synthetic until the engine has been able to break in for at least 1000 miles. By then it's safe to switch to full synthetic. Anyone using SYNTHETIC BLEND is wasting their money. Either use dino-oil or full synthetic, synthetic blend is just a marketing ploy to get your money. It isn't nearly as good as full synthetic yet costs more and lasts about the same as conventional oil.
