Coincidentally, "Jaws" got it's first oil change this weekend at 3,131 miles (cool number eh?).

Ford's oil change place across the street from the dealer did it for free (dealer pays for first oil change), and put in the right kind of oil, which was some kinda dang newfangled "synthetic blend" which is, what, like half'n'half syntho and dino? Was in and outta there in about 15 minutes, and got free cawffee to boot. Oil pressure is fine, no knocks, runs, drips or errors, and my wallet has been unscathed. 'Nuff said.

In the 4.6 you are correct.
5 quarts is one quart short of a full crank.

 

There are no metal particles/filings in the oil when you do the first oil change...

That's hard to believe a dealer would do ANYTHING that's not spelled out in the service manuals.

You sure about that? I would think if Ford found out the dealership was doing stuff like that, they'd put a stop to it...

I agree with others that 5W-30 probably won't hurt anything, but why switch from the recommended viscosity?

 

I've been following the Ford recommendation for oil changes in all my Fords for quite a while and haven't had any problems. I let the dealer service the car and change the oil (he's comparable in price to the quickie shops) and he uses Motorcraft 5-20 synthetic oil from day one. If you want to change the oil yourself, you can get the Motorcraft synthetic at almost any parts house, it's cheaper than Mobil One and it's a ful synthetic.

 

there were in mine at ~500 miles when i did it (myself)...probably have a few left in the oil drain pan if you want pictures.

Either my manual is wrong or you guys are missing the fact that Ford specifies 6qts. of 5W-20 for the 4.6L V8 Mustang GT AND for the 4.0L V6 Mustang, it specifies 5qts. of 5W-30. So if your dealer said they use 5W-30 in the V6, I think they are correct, unless I've lost all reading capabilities. 2 different cars, 2 different requirements

That's right. Two engines, two DIFFERENT requirements. READ your owner's manual.
BTW One other thing, I've noticed the Oil Shops like to fill them to the top (oil, brake flud, coolant, etc.) it's not necessary or even a good idea. In my 69 Cougar there is expansion in the radiator so it shouldn't be filled to the top. They wanted to add a extra 1/2 quart of oil to the Mustang (6.5 qts) I said no, overfilling isn't necessary and it'll just be blown out.

I believe that the 5w20 or 5w30 you should use depends on 2 basic factors: how many miles the motor has, and then where in the globe you live, because in a place where it is constantly 100 degrees should be a little different than a place where you have 30 degrees, that is my opinion only...

I did the oil change at 3k and they told me that was what was supposed to be, but again, I don't kill my car, I drive normal.
If I drove it strong, i would do the oil change earlier.

I just so happened to change mine at 470 miles today. motorcraft filter, and valvoline 5w20. next change will be mobil1 5w20 3,000 miles and every 3k after.

I dont pay for oil/filter, and do them myself.

 

2200 miles for my first change then about every 2500 after that since it was new. I have 12,000 on it and going to full synthetic this weekend. I've Been using the Motorcraft 5-20 Synthetic Blend and Motorcraft filters. Are all filters created equal? I have been reading about how some filters are rated down to 10 microns but most filters are rated at about 25-30 microns. I think K&N's filter and maybe Mobil 1's might be 10 micron rated. Someone here who knows a little bit about filters have a suggestion? Thanks

here you are sir. most of the flakes went out with the oil, but some of the oil/flakes were left in the drain pan...

if i were to do it over again, i'd have changed the oil within the first 50 miles, then again at 500 miles...

 

I had an engine rebuilt once, a 302 modified in my King Cobra, and the shop told me that the first oil change should be done at 500 miles and 2500-3000 after that.

 

I always spend the extra money for the better filters but they will plug up quicker & then the by-pass will open up & the oil will go through without being filtered at all if you have a problem that causes excessive wear.

 

Should I stick with 5w20 or use 5w 30?? I live in florida and have a gt vert with 1000 miles
