The recommended service states the first oil change should be done at 5000 miles, but I remember reading somewhere on the boards that 1000 miles is suggested due to the engine being new. I'm at 1000 miles now and wondering what to do.

5000 is ok, however if you do a lot of stop and start or a lot of short trips, every 3000.

I did my first one at 1,000 miles due to engine break in. Did the second one at 3,000 miles then every 3,000 miles after that.

It would be best to have the first change done at the dealer or a trusted shop because there were other threads that the filter is dry sealed from the factor and is difficult to remove.

I dont know about the Mustang as I dont have mine yet, but when I bought my Acura new, they told me not to change it early because it has special additives in the oil to aid break in and seals and what not. Dont know if Ford does anything like that.

You might want to do a search; this has been asked 5-6 times before.

I changed mine at 500, then 1000, then 3000 from then on. You'll get a million different opinions on this topic, but the way I look at it, no one has ever told me changing your oil early ever hurt an engine, and I usually keep my vehicles until the junk yard hauls them away.

I did the same thing with my '91 4.0L Ranger 4x4, and it's still going strong with 103,000 on the odometer. It's had Mobil 1 its whole life, but that's a totally different topic which has also been discussed at length on this forum (and every other car forum!)

Ford does not add a "break in oil". Like a previous post said, strong and varied opinions on this subject. I did 1500 and then 3,000 with Mobil 1.

1,500 then 4,000 then 7,000 (when I get to 7,000) and every 3K miles after that.
