First Mod

Just got a 06 GT and I love it, what is the first mod that you all recommend? I was thinking a cold air, but maybe exhaust first. Sorry for such a newbie question. I

My honest opinion


Eibach front/rear swaybars....

I used to be into all go, but after putting a set on my car and feeling the difference in handleing in corners.... it's proven to be a lot of bang for the buck.... (relatively speaking since it give no horsepower)

Axle Backs first(Sound), then CAI(Performance)... add a few exterior and interior mods to personalized it and you'll be good-to-go... Next should be a tune, wheels, etc, etc, etc... What's nice about these cars is that the available mods are endless. You'll run out of money way before you'll run out of available mods.

Thanks, the handling aspect is something I definitly want to address. I have also been reading where a re-flash is a requirement for most CAIs, if you did not do a re-flash after the CAI was put in, would there be any negative effects?

Ganatelli(GMS) w/MAF does not require a tune. Most CAI do... You will definitley have to reseach "this". It depends on how much performance gains you're looking for and how much you're willing to spend. I got the GMS with no intentions of getting a tune. NOW I want a tune... HP is addictive... as you will soon see...

It depends what CAI you get. KN Aircharger and MRT CAI's do not require a tune, but for all the others you will need it and a tune.

Ok man I've been where you are. I was thinking about a CAI but I didn't want to retune my car. FORD ROBS THE MUSTANG WITH THE STOCK COMPUTER TUNE. Talk to doug and get yourself a modest 87 octane tune and I promise this decision will be in the top ten of best decisions you've made. After the tune, what the others said is the way to go. Do some research, see whats out there. There's a lot of crap, but if you look long enough, there is some great stuff. Good luck and enjoy you stang!

Thanks alot, you gotta bare with me, I had a turbo Jetta before the Mustang and a MR2Turbo before that, so I am new to V8s, but I love it, I really wasted my time with those imported pieces of crap. Doing the research on Bamachips and tuning, that sounds like the way to go. I am going to order a JLT with tuning this week.

So you just plug the tuner into the OBD2 port and it has three different settings right? Can it be changed on the fly..or how does that work?

Dude do it. I got the jlt sct II combo a couple of week's ago from doug and it's amazing!

Can't tune it on the fly but it's very easy and fast to change tunes when you want. Just make sure that you are running the right fuel for the tune!

Mods in order of importance-

1. Brakes
2. Suspension
3. CIA and tuner
4. Exhaust
5. Cosmetics

For biggest driavability and fun factor I'd do the following in order.

1. Sct2 with a bamachips tune/cai combo (throttle response, performance enhancment)

2. Axle back exhaust. (wonderful V8 music!)

Those two gave me the best bang for the buck. The brakes and suspension would only be for the "cool" factor for me, I wouldn't be able to make use of upgraded suspension or brakes.

The best mod I have made to date has been an SCT tuner with a Bamachips Race tune- hands down.

The cold air kit is a close second. If you have an auto trans, then there is no question about it- the SCT tuner with a tune from a reputable tuning firm should be the first mod, simply because of all the improvements it will make with the auto trans programming, on top of what it will do for the engine programming.

Be careful where you buy your SCT- only buy from a retailer who is also a Mustang 05/07 tuning specialist. Otherwise, you will pay more $$ later to somebody else to get a custom tune (and the custom tune is far superior to whatever the SCT comes with). Bamachips, Brenspeed, and Evolution are tuners that people have had a lot of success with- research this forum.

If you get a CAI that says it requires a tune and dont do it your engine fuel/air mixture will become dangerously lean. The probability of damaging your engine is high. Had mine at the dyno last week and just for kicks we put the stock tune on to see and we did not even make a full pull because it was so lean. So either get a CAI that does not need a tune or one that does and do the tune.
Personally my favorite mod is the axle backs because it is always there to hear, whearas the tune only is beneficial during some driving condition. I do love the tune though.
