exhaust shootout in MM&FF this month
In 5.0 Magazine the Magnaflows made 9rwhp-
I am stuck in an airport in Denver right now- so I will have to wait to read the article before I make judgements-
however if they just dynoed one catback, swapped catbacks- then dynoed the next- then swapped- exc I think there could be some major flaws in the test-
WIth the 05 computer- more then ever you have to give the car time to learn the new exhaust system- so they could be confusing the heck out of the computer by coninously switching the mufflers around-

With out reading the article- my first impression is they just threw on the mufflers without letting the car learn the new exhaust system- to save time- as it would have taken several days to test all of those mufflers correcty-
Not to mention that cars make more power earlier in the morning- because of the density of the air-
The same thing happened when another magazine did an article on our minicooper exhaust- they said we only made 3fwhp and we saw 18fwhp gains- they were also switching all of the exhausts around-
We called them up and gave them the proper test procedures- and they saw a 16fwhp gain-
I am almost willing to bet money they did not give the 05 ample time to learn each exhaust system-
I guess tomorrow Ill have to give our PR person a call and let them know so we can contact the magazine- I will then report the test procedures used by the magazine-
Unfortunately when you have time restrictions, big shoot outs can not always be done correctly- we have seen it happen many many times-
There is no way a straight pipe should make less hp on a completely stock GT- Ford did a good job on the mufflers but not that good-
not saying there should be huge gains- but there should definitely be gains-

I just cannot believe that this topic was covered by the magazine. Why do people buy a certain type of exhaust? Well usually it is a combination of sound and power, in this case you can pretty much rule out sound to help you shop because the mag won't let you hear them. Sure you can get db's but I don't think anyone but old farts and young kids care about too quiet or too loud with db's, it all comes down to quality of sound. Secondly the power has been proven to be non-existent with axle back system changes. Yes dyno pulls vary back to back even up to 5 or more rear wheel horsepower, I have seen this on my own car. The 05 computer changes things on a modified engine so frequently it is almost impossible to get consistent numbers even on the same day. Bottom line is please don't waste your money thinking you are getting 2-3 more rear wheel horsepower than the other guy becuase you probably are not. Take my advice, only buy what combination you have heard and like, or take a chance buying without hearing like I did. Thank god I like the sound of my car because I have heard some that would have made me box up the mufflers and send em' back.
Yeah, I think most people seem to be purchasing for the sound.
Seems to be common knowledge that nothing but sound is to be gained from the axle backs on the 05 GT's.

Straight pipes used to be a controversial issue depending on what type of engine you were running as well as the size of piping for exhaust. I believe that the 2.5 inch exhaust flows well for the characteristics of this engine (3V) and it particularly likes just a little back pressure. I competed against a Roush that had long tubes that were open at the collectors, it was loud as heck on the throttle and quiet at idle but actually was slower than with full exhaust.
I already posted this question by starting a new thread, and I should have just posted here, The bassani Bx R series mufflers that are shaped like the can style mufflers were tested over the regular style. Does anyone know anything about these mufflers. I cannot seem to find anything about them.
Can anyone who has this month's MM&FF scan the article and post? This would be greatly appreciated. I would like to see the 'tables' for all the systems and compare hp/torque at different RPM. Thanks.

I finally got the magazine. I noticed a mistake on average HP for the FRPP mufflers. The magazine shows a lower average HP for the FRPP mufflers. That's not possible. The FRPPs where ahead at every rpm point. Compare and go down the line starting at 2400 rpm. Granted, we are still taking about 3-4 HP gains. I didn't check the other mufflers. I'm pretty sure the dyno numbers are good. I think some screwed up the averaging later.

The computer controls alot more then just the A/F ratio- what about timing, fuel curves exc......
An aftermarket exhaust will decrease engine/exhaust temperatures along with NOX which enables the computer to add in timing-
This is because the motor does not need to work as hard to push the exhaust out- as a result of the exhaust not getting backed up, which results in lower combustion chamber temperatures-
The 05 needs time to adjust to this- and if you keep changing the parameters- the computer can and will get confused-
We found this out when doing our R&D work-
In fact I have spoken with several of the Flowmaster reps at the last few shows, and they even mentioned they were having similar problems- in fact they ended up using 6 different GTs to design their axle backs because the car was throwing them for such loops-
An axle back does not effect the A/F ratio on the 05 GT- as an intake would- so the A/F ratio does not do much when testing catbacks

and straight pipes will get you much more then .2 hp because it is a proven fact that these mod motors LOVE to breathe-

I'm really leaning toward the Magnaflows. I like the quality, design, and price; but don't want it quieter than stock and losing power. Here's your chance for the sales pitch.
