This code is unpredictable. Again today, I drove it 20+ miles to work, then went out at lunch and drove a few more miles (including a couple WOT romps). Then, I drove it 3/4 of the way home tonight and stopped for gas. As I was slowly leaving the gas station, the CEL came on. It's weird that it happens going slow, but not at WOT or on the freeway.

I would recommend just replacing the sensor if it's not to much $$. I've seen a lot of cam and crank sensors have this exact behavior. It takes a while for them to heat up, and then the coil inside them will intermittently open or short. It is next to impossible to catch it acting up.

Just as a good example, my fathers '96 Grand Marquis (4.6L) was throwing the same code. It was intermittent, and only after it had been driven a while. I finally caught it -- the sensor coil would open (no connection). Slapped a sensor in it, and six or so years later it is still fine.

That sensor is currently $13 from AutoZone. I'm sure one for our cars is not much more.

Or you could swap the bank 1 & 2 sensors around to see if the code changes to the other bank. My code still shows bank 1.

George.. how does it show which bank? What am I not seeing?

P0340 & P0344 is for bank 1. P0345 & P0349 is for bank 2.

Thanks George. The website I had looked at for the codes did not specify which bank. That's good to know. Am I correct in assuming that bank 1 the driver's side?

No. The bank is determined by the location of the #1 sparkplug. On a Ford RWD car the #1 plug is the first plug on the passenger side. So bank 1 would be the passenger side.

Geez... a 50/50 chance and I was wrong. haha.

I think I'll try swapping the sensors this weekend and see if I get the same code or the P0345 code. If I get the same code, then that should eliminate the sensor as the problem.

I was looking into this a bit and read somewhere where another person had this in a 97 GT. 2 things were found to be the cause of this after replacing sensor's and wasting money on checkups and such. They found to be a RF interference. They also found this due to certain types of spark plug wires-aftermarket, that created more than tolerable RF interference. The RF sensors are right by the Position sensors on the 05/06. Maybe a direction to look into. Just trying to toss ideas.

Okay, Sorry for the last post. I honestly just read the whole thread after posting. It seems George is on the right track based the little that I've dug up. Where did you guys run your wiring for the water pump? I ran mine just below the RF sensor. I, fortunately, haven't had this code yet. Then again, my car hasn't ran in a few months. Maybe cool weather, different accessories running?

Originally I ran the pump wiring over the cam cover, but we moved it when the KB was installed. It runs near the sensor now. What is weird is that the KB was installed on 1/28, and the first CEL showed up just this past week. Why didn't it show up in the first two weeks? And why isn't it consistent? I disconnected the wires to the waterpump and still got the codes. I think I've looked at everything that could cause RFI. I think my problem is in the VCT itself.
[/b][/quote]

George, do you get both codes everytime? I got both codes the first time, but since then just P0340.

And does the CEL come on immediately? Or is it delayed like mine?

The gremlins must be taking the whole weekend off... I was out Saturday night, and then twice again yesterday, and no codes. Go figure.

I hate trivial issues! I'll keep asking around and see what I dig up.

LOL, don't blame it on me! I suggested to Don to post it up on SCTflash.com. Maybe someone else or a tuner will recognize the issue.

Was there ever a resolution to this issue?

I had my alternator replaced
I retuned the car to stock (Steeda pulleys, Tune and CAI)
I have no other aftermarket parts other than Plenum cover, and some steel braided hoses (sleeves)
and I still have the axle-back MAC and 4:10 Gears

It happens when it gets warmed up and only going slow, just before it happens the motor gets boggy and rough..

I would try and post it here.

There is a Ford tech there named Casper who might be able to help.
