The cam and the lifters are buried in the V in the middle of the block just above the crank so the sound of the cam action isn't up top like an OHC. Added to the fact there are 24 valves & roller followers working on the 4.6L SOHC 3V instead of the more typical 16 on a single cam OHC (8 in/8 ex) or Pushrod for that matter. A modern refinement of the all powerful 427 'SOHC Cammer', the monster of the 60's. Ahead of its time IMO.

Here's your 3V cam with the finger followers reaching the intake bank of valves as well as the exhaust bank of valves from just one cam (per bank):

And here's the view of the underside of the cylinder head. 2 intake valves, 1 big exhaust:

If Ford would have put the same level of engineering into breathing on the 3V head that they did on the new 5.0 4V head, I don't think there would be the 100hp difference. Because the 3V has less moving parts to push compared to the DOHC. The better breathing and the higher redline is a much bigger factor in the 5.0L/302's 420HP than the mere .4 liters/21 cubic inch increase over the 4.6L/281 IMO.

With this I agree, although I imagine they would have had to put some serious time into the valve springs and vibration management to make it top notch also.

I personally wouldn't drop 8k for the 5.0 motor unless it was built.

Those motors are high compression and I wouldn't feel comfortable doing any kind of blower addition to a 5.0. That's just me of course.

I put the 5.4 in my car and am extremely happy with it.

But that was after I pushed the limit of my 4.6 with a Saleen blower.

I'd feel more comfortable modding the 4.6 than the 5.0 just because of the compression ratio.

If I were to supercharge a 5L I'd go with FRPP kit.

If I had 5.0 to begin with then I might... but I don't know, after hearing about the #8 piston issues I'm not sure.

But in his situation he could drop the same amount of money (or near it) for a 5.4 setup with a blower already attached and make more power stock than he would if he bought the 5.0 then spent another 2k on a blower.

I wouldn't hesitate on the FRPP tune with the S/C on a 5L.
It's a pretty solid setup.
