DIY Line Lock Question

The guy at the auto parts store gave me some teflon tape to use on the tapered pipe fittings that screw into the solenoids. Should I use the tape on the flare nuts, too?

Tape is useless if you dont do the flares correctly.NO TAPE.Brake fluid would eat it anyways.

good point. the flare nut itself doesn't do anything but press the double flare into the fitting. i was kinda wondering if it was a bit like lock-tite

Mike is right, the Teflon tape dissolves as soon as brake fluid touches it

If brake fluid ever reaches the threads on the flare nuts I have bigger problems. What is the purpose of teflon tape on the tapered pipe fittings if it will dissolve immediately? What is the purpose of teflon tape, period?

Teflon tape is a good sealant for stuff like water and air, not corrosive fluids.

Not entirely true. Virgin Teflon is very chemical resistant. Tape may be a blend if it is dissolving. See below.

Virgin PTFE
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a high molecular weight polymer, one of the most versatile plastic materials known and useful for a large range of products for applications excluded to other materials. The most outstanding characteristics are:
  • high heat resistance
  • high resistance to chemical agents and solvents
  • high anti adhesiveness
  • high dielectric properties
  • low friction coefficient
  • non-toxicity.
PTFE is generally considered a thermoplastic polymer; at 327°C it maintains a very high viscosity, thus requiring particular transformation techniques for manufacturing of finished and semi-finished goods. PTFE can be employed at any temperature from -200°C to +260°C.

I used Teflon tape to install the pipe fittings into the linelock, no leaks at all .
