Please compare and contrast:
a. the sound
b. the performance

of the following four mid pipes:
1. Bassani X Pipe
2. JBA H Pipe
3. Mac ProChamber
4. Magnaflow X Pipe

Assume the following:
* There are NO other mods on the car besides a CAI and a custom tune. Stock headers, stock mufflers (axle backs).
* We talking about the catted versions of each mid pipe. No offroads!

Yes, I have read tons of Mustang exhaust threads on this site and downloaded tons of clips, but the info is scattered about thus making it hard for me to do a direct comparison of the three that I'm interested in. I'm looking for "deep, throaty, gurgling" with the best performance while staying legal.

Thanks for your time and I hope this thread helps out some other people considering a mid pipe!

Don't forget the Magnaflow X-pipe.

Are you looking at o/r pipes or a catted x-pipe?

Clearly stated in the problem description...

OK, I added the Magnaflow X Pipes to the question, but can't change the title. =)

Oops, I missed that. :bang:

Anyway, from what I've heard the catted x-pipes in general quiet down the loundness just a bit, while making it deeper. Next month mmff magazine will have a shootout on X-pipes, so keep an eye out on that.

I'd also like to know from anyone who had added an x-pipe how it changed the sound to them.

This topic is very tough. I too am in the same boat as far as wanting a little deeper growl, but there is a lot of doubt on actual increases power wise due to the better than avg. quality of the stock pipe. To be honest I am thinking of the bassani 5pc that has cats or no cats depending on your mood.

Personally, I'm going with MAC's Prochamber offroad H. X pipes in general have a more higher pitched sound, not a fan. Ordering her tomorrow.

How do you feel an X pipe compares to a ProChamber performance wise?

I've been wondering about the Prochamber's performance vs. an x-pipe. I'm pretty sure I'd like the sound of the prochamber better personally, but I hate to spend $500 for the catted version only to get minimal HP gains. Lately, I've been considering the Dynatech long tube headers with the catted x-pipe over at rpmoutlet.com.

I have a Mac Off-road X pipe and love it. It sounds great and the performance up top is noticeable. Reportedly it's good for ~15 rwhp. We will see next month when they test x-pipes in the MMFF(?). One caveat, an X-pipe will sound raspy, there is no way around this.

I've called MAC on it, and have spoken to many others..If you keep the cats with the prochamber, you won't get as much of power gains and it will not be as loud. If you go with the offroad (which I am), which eliminates the cats..MAC claimed 18hp to the wheels...which I HIGHLY doubt..a more accurate estimate is 10-15 rwhp, identical to the X. Also, the offroad will scream american muscle...the exact sound I'm lookin for

Yes, I love the way the off road pipes sound, but I'm not ready to take that step into illegality... 10-15 rwhp without cats, huh? I wonder how much that translates into with high flow cats.

So I guess its between a catted H pipe and a catted ProChamber. Any opinions on the sound/performance between those two?

A prochamber IS an H-pipe. Prochamber is just what MAC calls it...A "catted prochamber" is a "catted H-pipe".

H-pipe is what the car comes with stock. It's basically a piece welded between the 2 exhaust tubes before the axles. Prochamber is a chamber (almost looks like a muffler.) Kinda creates an echo from what I understand that makes it a bit deeper.

The Prochamber may look like an H-pipe from the outside, but if you could see inside it you would see that it has basically the same design as alot of the clamshell X pipes. Go to RPMOutlet.com and look at the pics they have.
