Cold Air Intake
I suppose Steeda can say that their MAF sensor is proprietary and that they must keep the secret air transfer function a secret among the super secret tuner network.
I was referring to actually getting the air transfer function along with the CAI kit and not having to rely on a dealer for a canned tune when I already have a blank X-Cal 2 and the SCT Pro Racer Package w/ the Advantage software.

It is initially $800 for 1 tuner and the Advantage software (full control over the tune). I can buy a blank tuner + database for each additional vehicle. The biggest difference between the PRP and a canned tune is that you have full control over the tune. The Advantage software runs off a laptop. I'm surprised no one has heard of it here??? I've been using it on my Vic for the past 3 years. I think I must have flashed the PCM about 2,000 times!
The SCT dealers/tuners are using Advantage 3 right now, IIRC. SCT is working on a way for PRP users to get Advantage 3 (we're still using 2.9x). I bought a database + tuner for our cargo van just to look at the factory calibration, because I'm always interested in seeing what makes it tick.
I am considering installing a cold air intake, is it neccessary to purchase a calibrator to change the settings in the computer? or can I just install the new intake without it. I'm not planning to do too many mods to the engine right away and I don't want to waste my money purchasing a calibator I may never use again.
And I would love suggestions on which cold air intake to purchase

Well I ordered the JLT cai/x2 from Doug at Bamachips today.
I hope no one yells at me but I calibrated it at 91 because the price of gas and i'm sure it will go back up after the election. Doug said I will still see a noticable difference in the power. Has anyone else calibrated theirs at 91?
Sounds good man. I just ordered the same combo from Doug except I am getting the 93 octane perf./torq/race tunes. I am going to meet him tomorrow actually and we're going to do a baseline dyno then add the intake and tune and re-dyno to see the gains. I'm looking forward to it! Will let you know how it rides if I can stop driving it!

Like you smokenpony, I believe gas prices are just down until after the elections. I have an aFe CAI and an SCT tune from Paul's High Performance set for 89 octane. It was a very significant improvement in the car's performance. So, I think your 91 tune is going to be even better.

If the dealer installs any of your parts ?? and even if later it's proven they were the cause of your warranted parts to fail ?? Ford must then honor your factory warranty..On the other hand ? if you install any aftermarket part yourself ? and Ford is able to prove within a reasonable doubt, that your aftermarket parts were directly responsible for the warranted parts to fail ?? then yes, Ford will deny your warranty claim..

Depends what you want to do. There's a good selection of CAIs that do not require a flash of the computer. Although you're only going to see 10-15hp gains. If you're looking for more hp, then as GT John stated, yes, you will need a tuner. Look at JLT and C&L as they are the two most popular CAIs which bring good gains. Also go with an SCT Xcal2. If you don't have an SCT tuner nearby, you can purchase a complete kit from Bamachips, Brenspeed or EVO Performance. There are other mail order tuners out there, but these three have really shown their worth.
