I have 22,000 on my GT manual, I don't drag race, I don't do massive burnouts, I don't ride the clutch but yesterday when I pulled in the garage I smelled that "burnt clutch smell. Checked under the hood to see if the smell was still there later didn't notice it. Went out to the store this morning backed out no problem. Put it in first let out clutch about half way and it started to shudder, definite slippage. The question is how could it just fail without any prior signs and secondly since I will need to replace it what clutch would you replace it with?

Maybe since it's going I'll take it out today and finish it off!

Thanks for the information I'll check it out.

I'm not an expert by ANY means...
but I remember reading somewhere that if the clutch material is glazed, you can have slipage, even if theres lots of material left.

I'd get it checked out

I wish the car had a clutch life reading.
I can't remember which car had that, but it would tell you in % on one of the status settings, how much clutch life was left.

I called a friend who suggested it may just be glazed, but couldn't answer if that is fatal or fixable. Any of you high performance guys have input?

haha...

But yeah, if it's glazed over, just drive it. 22k seems like an awfully short life for a clutch...

Take the car into the dealer. If you are being honest and don't beat on the car, something is wrong. This is assuming that you know how to drive a manual transmission. A clutch should last more than 22K. heck I beat on my car and have drag raced it all while being modded. I have almost 22K on my stock clutch and it grips hard.

I run mine at the Track with slicks and nitrous.Still the original one.I do get a clutch smell at the end of the run but, look what I am doing to it.
You should in no way smell it.You mite want to check your brakes.a sticky caliper will smell the same as the clutch.

I smoked mine once doing a dry burnout last year. The week later I overheated it bad by doing 5 runs in an hour during eliminations. I have also over 600 1/4 mile runs in 12,000miles of driving. It still ran down the track in 12.85 last Tuesday night speedshifting through all gears even though it was slipping. As you can see they're pretty durable. Take it to your dealer and see what they say. Be sure to tell them you don't want them to pull the transmission if they plan on charging you since you'll probably buy an aftermarket clutch if it's on your dime.

I have the 05 specific Centerforce DF611679 Dual Friction Clutch along with the 05 specific Fidanza 186551 Aluminum Flywheel ready to go in as soon as I find the time. I'll do a writeup as soon as it's in and another one once it's broken in.

Jason, Peter, Mike,
Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to run it by the dealer and see what they say. I'm sure they will try to say it was me and some of it probably is but by your accounts it should have lasted longer. If I'm guilty of anything it is a little hot ******* when I first got it over a year ago. I've done some autocross but that is just one quick shift to second. I don't ride the clutch and yes I've had a manual transmission most of my driving career which I've abused much more than this one. If it's my dime I'll upgrade.

Back from the dealer....good news, they will replace the clutch. Even better is if I want to go after market they will install it at a modest fee since they will make their money on the R&R of the stock one. Helps to know somone at the dealship!

I don't do massive burnouts

I assume then you do some burnouts. Just not massive ones. What the heck does that mean??? Of course the clutch will burn up sooner or later if you do any burnouts. JMO

The material was glazed over and multi colored shades of blue and browns. Obviously I had gotten it a little too hot! But as God is my witness I have abused cars in the past and never had one give up this easy.
