Clutch rattle on new 06 GT
I’ve had my 06 Tungsten grey GT 5sp manual for about two weeks now, and two fairly major quality issues have surfaced. One was the Two-Tone nature of the paint between the body panels and the bumpers, which is discussed in separate thread titled “Two-Tone Tungsten: Is yours?”, so I won’t discuss that here. The second issue is a RATTLE FROM THE CLUTCH AT IDLE WHEN IN NEUTRAL AND THE CLUTCH PEDAL IS UP. From reading other forums, this noise can be attributed to the “clutch throwout bearing”, but usually on older cars. In the June 2005 issue of Car and Driver, an article mentioned a “a subdued rattle from the clutch throwout bearing at idle” when they had road tested/reviewed the 05 Mustang GT Conv.
The clutch rattle on my 06 is embarrassingly loud, not subdued. I actually noticed this when I first picked up the car, but at the time wasn’t sure where the noise was coming from and just wanted to get on the road. Two days later on the follow-yp call from my Dealer, I informed him of the rattle. He said to bring her in and he'll have a tech look at it, but also said that he thought Ford had resolved that issue in the 06 model, implying that it was an issue with 05 cars. How many of you with 05 or 06’s have this issue? If so, how has Ford or the dealership remedied the problem.

I've only had my 05 for 4 days, but I don't notice any rattle. I *did* notice that there is a lot of transmission noise in general (when shifting and working the clutch). My friend told me it is because a heavy duty clutch is required for the high torque and it is normal. He said his Mustang's transmission was loud, but his Vette's (2003 Z06) is even louder.
I had a problem with the throw out bearing on my '98, and I know other model years have had probs as well.... I had the rattle you're talking about as well as a squeaking noise too.... annoying, yes..... But hey... wudduya do? take it in and have it fixed.
O5 here with under 4k on the clock, and have had that noise sice day one. Checked 2 others on the lot last week, same thing. As for "actual" cause...Im not certain.
But I have clunks, and whines, chatters. Listen to your rear, hear it humming?
Enjoy that ride

Same here. Got my 05 in February and have had that "rattle" from day one. - have 4500 miles on it. It appears, at least to me, that it is more likely after the engine/drivetrain is hot. Took it in for service to someone I have been dealing with since 1992 and have some trust in. He said it sounded like it was normal. There was a thread on this about a month or so ago, and some members thought it was the clutch facing
I'm on my third V-8 Mustang in a row (1987, '92, and '02) and they've all had the same problem. On the '92 the dealer replaced the entire transmission and clutch to no avail. I eventually installed a rubber gasket at the top of the clutch pedal to absorb some of the vibration. I think it's something you should just learn to live with; the only other choice is to have a tech take the car apart over and over again.

But having said this, transmission whine on the 06 sounds minimal to me. Maybe Ford has lessened this issue in the 06's. There were several tech bulletins on this for the 05 model.

I've been told by a reliable senior Ford tech that the tranny whine on the new GTs is due to a change in the cut on the gears. To make the tranny stronger, they changed the pitch on the gear teeth, which does cause a little more whine - but it also makes the gears a heck of a lot stronger.
