Cammed 06 GT with 100k mikes??

Would it be safe to cam my 06 GT with 100k miles? I just bought long tube headers, and CAI and new plugs and coils, and new clutch. If its safe is there anything else I would need to be safe?

I'm sure you'd be fine. I have cams and my car has 74k on it. Maybe new valve springs and a timing chain kit since that's gonna be all apart anyway. Best bet would be to call a guy that tunes a lot of mustangs I'd think.

Do a compression check first so you know how strong the rings/valves are.
Agreed on the timing chain and tensioners. Check the VCT. I'd replace the oil pump too.

Well before I got gears it was hard to drive. Bucked a lot with the stock 331s. Since I got 410s it's been great. And I'll be getting my headers put on soon which I've heard further smoothens the ride at low speed in low gear. The idle, overall sound, and feel is amazing. I haven't been dynoed yet but Jake Lamotta says after he dynos it with the long tubes I should be at around 320rwhp. Over all I dig em. Later on when I pull the heads I'll put in some beehives to get rid of the float at the top end.

If he's properly or over maintained his engine I'd think he'd be good on the oil pump and rings no? The valve train may need some work but I'd doubt it, depending on how he drives the car. I can't say I've ever heard of an oil pump quitting on a 4.6, not to say it hasn't happened. Normally when I've seen blown up modular motors it's from over heating or neglect. Specifically no oil and no coolant. I've seen a 4.6 2v launch a rod through a block before but that was from a lightening strike that cooked a PCM, left an injector wide open, and caused a big boom lol. And the motor STILL ran! For months! The hole was just far enough up so it didn't leak any fluids, just ran like it had a bad coil! Crazy! Anyway.... lol. Get it checked out but I wouldn't go crazy. The cams, associate parts, and labor are gonna cost enough lol

There's a few of threads lately where either the oil pump failed or the VCT failed that created problems in the valve train from filings plugging up the oil ports. One had filings pumped through the entire engine scoring a number of bearings, another appears to only have damaged the cam and cam journals (requiring new heads).

At 100k, if I'm going to beef up a motor, I'd just as soon spend a little extra for a "soft rebuild" - chains/tensioners, oil pump, water pump - all the little things that are nevertheless vital, but short of a full rebuild of crank bearings, rings, etc. But that's me.

Also, I did a valve job on a DOHC back in the day and that put more pressure on the weakening 100k rings (didn't do a comp check first) causing a lot of oil usage. So I did all that work and money on an engine that should have been completely rebuilt while I had it half torn down.

Wow no kidding. That's definitely news to me lol. I had no clue. Listen to cydnaco! Once my motor ****s the bed I'm either gonna stroke it or get a 5.4 4v. Or who knows. My plan is to make it a NA street/strip car after its all paid for. Well see what happens. Glad you put that info on me though, good looking out.

Yeah its a surprise to me. Kind of disappointing. Although there's some 4.6L 3V's over 100k and 200k so far that are running fine.

Yea I just finished skimming through it. I have NEVER heard of anything like that before. Wicked surprising. That's really weird. But hey it is what it is. Just gotta roll with the punches. Maybe it has to do with poor maintenance? I change my oil like every 5 k with a k&n filter with full synthetic mobile 1. Just gotta take care of her and hope for the best I suppose.

Right.

That fnsweet link really opened my eyes with comments about Roush.
A few weeks back I was looking at a used 08 F150 with a 5.4L 3V on a lot. Did some searches and found a number of links about its VCT having problems.

Yea that's nuts man. My buddy has an early 2000s f250 with the 5.4 and he BEATS THE **** OUTTA THAT THING. I mean I've seen hime leave home depot with 40 sheets of 4x12 1/2" drywall in the bed trying to pop a wheelie lol. It has like 250k on it with zero problems.

It wasn't poor maintenance. It looks like the thrust washer wore out.
