The "new" C&L heat shield is still pretty clumsy to install - I just did mine an hour ago, and battled it to get it to sit down just right. I don't like the fact that you have to secure it with zip ties. (WTF?)

I didn't bother.

I didn't even know mine was the "new" design until I read this thread - wow, those old ones must have been REALLY bad.

On the contrary. I installed C&L's original shield in June, 2005. It installed without a hitch(incl. the zip tie), it hasn't moved/warped/broke, and it's still performing flawlessly.

Are not most CAI'S, including the C&L, around $300? If so a zip tie just seems cheap and chessy. There should be an option to drill a hole on the inside quarter panel and use a self threading screw which would secure it better and make it look like something actually worth $300 or so dollars...

My K&N heatshield is metal with rubber gaskets around the outside. It bolts to the now unused intake box bolt and the radiator. It is solid and blocks air well.

My Steeda heatsheild is also metal and retains the 2 factory rubber gronents, from the stock airbox..it always stays right in place and almost looks as though it were installed straight from the factory..

seems like it would be pretty easy to make a heatshield with some sheet metal and tin snips. then find a rubber grommet and gasket for the top where it meets the hood. (but i dunno it might turnout to look worse than pep boys)
