I was just wondering, to get that throaty, maximum, V8 sound is it necessary to pay the exorbitant prices for a Borla exhaust or is there a company that will give you the 10 or so horsepower gain and nice throaty sound without spending $700+? Thanks guys....

I keep telling folks.... 1 chamber Flowmasters. About $60.00 each from Summit. keep your stock tips, just get them installed in place of the origional muffs. 1 chambers are designed for only packpressure (the single chamber). The noise chamber is not there (2nd chamber). Typical 90 series flowmasters are 2 chambers, made for pressure and sound. They are about 7" wide and 8" long. Used ALOT on drag cars.

Here.... it's the tiny one, in the middle.

They're called "Delts Force" race mufflers. Here they are in SUMMIT! $79.00 each:

Most aftermarket exhaust systems sound nice and will give you a slight boost in performance. You dont have to pay a fortune for them either. There are good alternatives made by magnaflow, dynomax, flowmaster, and more.

Borla's are ALWAYS necessary.

But they aren't for everyone...that I'll admit.

With exhaust systems, I prefer quality over quantity,

From what I have seen and heard with Borlas, they are worth the price,

I thought I heard that the aftermarket exahaust was getting less than 5 hp gain. It was more for the sound than any hp gain.

That is a very true statement. I have the Magnaflows and other than the sound there was only a percieved gain. When I had her to the Dyno I found out the truth.

The borla's are wayyyy overpriced and they are notorius for install issues.I have installed many of them and run into many fitment problems along the way. They material is good but not worth the $$ you have to shell out..Get the Magnaflow or Bassani

i took off my (non kit, not suggested by) Flowmasters and went back to stock. Sound was better with Flowmaster, but they cost me 2hp. The new Flowmaster kit (soon to be out, one member here was the R&D after my R&D) is looking at modest claims, similar to the magnaflow (greater than 5hp buy not by much)

what's the point of buying their pipes, mine came w/ mandrel bent 2.5 inch exhaust....all I had to do was change the mufflers (flowmaster 40 series), didn't see a reason for the axle back kit....didn't see a reason to spend $400 plus when the pipe on the vehicle was as big as you were gonna get when you ordered it from an a/m company.....maybe i'm just crazy????

What is the risk of removing the mufflers alltogether? I have my GT at the shop now to install Borlas. The owner called me ask me to come down and listen to what he thinks is a great sound. When I got there hee had removed the stock mufflers and put on pipes straight out the back with no muffler. The sound at 3 to 5 thousand rpm was great, not nearly as loud as you may think. Is there a risk or loss of performance to leave it this way?

If you want a cheap SS exhaust that makes good power and a nice sound go with Magnaflow. If you want know what the sound like they supplied the mufflers for most of Ford's blown SVT vehicles. Borla is better, but Maganaflows can be had for very little dough and they sound better than Flowmasters to me. Nice and throaty but not overly loud.

Question: Of the aftermarket exhausts out there which are both cat-back and axle-back (I know Magnaflow has both), have people written about it sounded quite different?

Reason I want to know is, the cat-back won't gain you any power (let alone the whole exhaust), but if eliminating 2-3 bends changes the sound for the better, it may be the only reason to get a cat-back.

Thoughts?

Bob, go for it. Doesn't the car sound sweeeet.

There is no risk in taking off your mufflers. I have almost 4K on my muffler delete & poor mans CAI mods. Both these mods have made a tremendous difference in the cars performance & MPG. I drive 40K a year so MPG improvements are nice.

The car is "uncorked" with these mods. No engine light. Check out my thread.
