Auto vs Stick, which one is stronger

Hey guys,

I have a chance to purchase an 06 GT Deluxe trim with the auto trans for $500.00 under invoice. I was looking for a 5spd car but this is such a good deal I'm seriously considering it. How does the auto trans compare to the 5spd as far as strength??? I want to get the FRPP Whipple HO kit which is claimed to give 460 rwhp and have concerns about the auto trans.

Any sugestions???

That's a sticky situation man. That's a sweet deal and the auto's are pretty fast but I love driving stick way too much. If it were me I would find a 5spd, I never like to just settle and then end up regret it later that's just me though. If you don't mind answering how much do they want?

I am with 2005Sonicgt however once I got my car, my friend dumped his rice dream 350Z and went Stang also. Like me he was trying to get an 06 under the 0% finance however our friend at the local dealer could not locate a 5spd from central FL south. He ended up getting an auto and so far he loves it. He loves driving stick but his car is his everyday driver and he is on the phone alot for work so it works well for him (plus according to him he loves "Just Punching it and it goes"). He is not sorry he ended up with an auto (he may if he desides to take it some road courses).

He also sent the car right to Steeda. He has a bunch of stuff done to it including a Magnuson S/C putting 416 HP at the wheels I think and so far his tranny is fine. Not sure about 460 RWHP though. I would do some more reseach. Call around to some reputable speed shops like Steeda for some info.

Yeah I'm considering going with the auto just because of the price. I don't think I'll ever come close to a price like that on an 07 even if it is a stick.

Historically, auto transmissions have been relatively bulletproof. Of course there are exceptions, however running that amount of power through the auto should not be a problem. I would go for it. I'm a stick guy all the way, however for traffic concerns in houston I bought an auto, and with dougs tune, it was deffinately the right decision for me. Good luck.

Yeah I know but this is a killer deal and 5spds are hard to come by. No way I'm going to get a deal like this on an 07 5spd car. If the auto trans can handle the power then I just may go for it. I have some thinking to do.

I like my stick. But if you want advice on the strength of the auto, check what DonW at 2005stang.com has done. He's got an 11sec auto.

I originally wanted a stick but my dealer didn't have any so i got the Auto and it was possibly one of the best decisions i've ever made.

I've read about his car before, very impressive. He's got a ton of money into his trans though, I believe Art Car did a complete rebuild on it. He's supposedly got a custom torque converter, stronger input shafts, clutch packs and so on. Not sure I'd want to go through all that expense and hastle.

I maybe wrong here but I dont think Whipple intends on offering their HO kit for the auto's. So if you want the most from your Whipple kit then get the manual but I have an auto and I love it. Yes, it is nice to go through the gears and have fun driving but for the other time at cruise its nice to through your hand on the shifter and relax. Hard choice but if you are adding in the Whipple you may wanna call and confirm what I've said.

Thanks, Doug.

My $0.02: get the auto, the deal is just too good to pass. Later you'll be able to install the upcoming shifter from B&M Racing and you'll have the best of both worlds.

Check out the B&M shifter here:

My wife drives our car every day and it's super consistent at the track. I've never missed a shift either. Also everyone needs to remember that while the B&M shifter will be a nice cosmetic upgrade that's all it's gonna be. It's not a C-4 tranny in these cars and it will not shift on demand with the new shifter. It's computer controlled and not a manual valve body type deal and never will be. That being said we have total control over WOT shift points and with a good tranny tune the 5R55S bangs through the gears. My car has only a torque converter and it's been bullet proof to this point with lots of 1/4 mile passes. It's all about personal preference. Road course or windy road driving is manual terrirtory blistering the 1320' strip auto's rule!

The new 5 speed auto has been putting out good times. But the 2nd gear is weak.

Arent the auto's putting down better times than the manuals? The auto shifts so **** smooth, I dont see how they couldnt be with the right tunes, etc. supercharged or not.
