anyone have gutted cats or O/R pipe with SLP's?

Considering gutting my cats. I've heard people doing this and not getting a CEL light. Even if I do get a CEL light will the car run fine or go into limp home mode?
With loudmouths and gutted cats how will the loss of backpressure effect the engine?
