Aligning tailpipes in cutouts

I got new axleback mufflers a couple of months ago and noticed that they weren't aligned quite right almost as soon as I got home. They still looked good, so I thought, meh, I can live with it.

Well, I cannot live with it any longer. I notice it every time I go out to my car. It's really starting to make me crazy. The passenger side pipe is about 1/4 inch lower than the driver side pipe. It is also not quite centered in the cutout. Actually, I'd like both pipes to be better centered and tucked up a little more. I have attached a picture so you can see what I'm talking about.

Does anyone know how hard this is do at home? I have a set of box-end wrenches and I'm not an idiot, but I don't want to make anything worse, especially when it might be a relatively easy/inexpensive fix for a qualified mechanic.

Thanks for any help or direction anyone may be able to provide, and Happy New Year.

try and remove the clamps at the end of your midpipe right where it connects to the over axle pipe and try to move the pipe around a little bit.

did you try this already? maybe bend the hanger on the muffler a little bit to try and tuck it up more.
other than that, im not sure buddy. good luck with your choice of repair.

I have the Pypes MM system, notoriously one of the worst to line up. I had some issues as well. I ended up heating up the hangers so the would bend a little as I worked the tailpipe into position.

You know that this will only drive you crazy.
99.9% of most people will just say, "It sounds nice, what were you saying was wrong with it?".

The easiest fix that I did with mine was to bend the hanger to adjust to suit. That worked for me.

I had to adjust my Pypes Violators. The stock GT tips weren't aligned either but they look halfway decent. If you look closely at other cars on the road, many of them have misaligned tips as well. It's all part of mass production with lazy QA.

That's pretty much what I had to do.

I don't recommend bending them. You can fatigue the muffler shell and welds. I recommend heating the hangers and making strategic bends. T409 and T304 are stainless steel and won't rust because of the heating. They'll show signs of thermal annealing but as long as you don't quench them in water or brine, they shouldn't get harder and more brittle.

Ditto...my Violators were WAY OFF...took mine to the muffler shop and they took a torch to it and bent the hangers. Now they're perfect.

Try this method before bending any hanger rods.

Loosen the mid-pipe clamps and over-axle clamps.

With both clamps loose (over-axle and mid-pipe), center your exhaust tip in the bumper cut-out. This is where an extra pair of hands will come in handy.. Have someone hold the position of the exhaust tip where you want it, then tighten the over-axle clamp first, then the mid-pipe clamp last.

I agree with TacoBill but in my case with the Violators, no amount of adjustment would solve the problem. The hangers had to be bent.

Bill, how will loosening the over-axle clamps help ? If I'm not mistaken, the nipple which holds the over-axle pipe in place, won't allow it to turn anyhow.

Other than loosening the mid-pipe clamps, I really don't see any other way for aligning the exhaust tips, except for heating the muffler hangers, and then bending them.

Taco's method works. Had to manipulate both of my GTAs upon installation. You should be able to get them pretty close like this. Recommend a buddy and a lift .

The slightest amount of rotation of the over-axle-pipe in conjunction with the mid-pipe will affect the tip location. I know it doesn't seem like much, but it will make a difference.

I didn't say that his method doesn't work, I just asked how it works.

Now I fully understand how it works Bill, so thank you for clearing this up for me

It depends on the mufflers. This method WILL NOT WORK with the Violators. The tips stuck out by 2" when the over-axle and intermediate pipes were bottomed out. In this instance the hangers had to be bent. Adjusting the pipes is an easy and cheap method to see if it will fix the problem but it is by no means a final solution.
