I took my Mustang to the dealer today for it's first oil change. I got home, looked at the bill & they had charded me for 7 quarts of oil. ($6.00 per quart) I checked the dipstick. To me it looked like a full mark (line) & about a quarter inch above that there is a small hole through the dipstick. The oil level was about a quarter inch above that.
I called the dealer & they said if it was more than a quarter inch over the full mark some would have to be drained.
I took it back.(18 miles each way) The guy that changed it pulled the stick & claimed it was right where it is suppose to be. I asked him if he put 7 quarts in. He said he had because at 6 quarts it was still a quart low. He told me you can't go by the owners manual!
Is 7 quarts going to hurt it?

They do the same thing on my Mach all of the time. I just tell them "I'll add an extra quart at home if I need it" .. I think they have a hard time reading the stick. I dunno. It's defintely odd.

OUCH!

Extra oil could cause foaming, but one quart shouldn't hurt it for the short time you had it in there. I'd tell him "I guess you can't go by what an idiot mechanic says."

Get yourself a couple of ramps and a drain pan from Auto Zone or Wally World and do the oil changes yourself. You'll learn a lot more about your car, have fun, and also maybe even save some money.

"Short time I had it in there?" It is still in there, that's why I'm asking!

I usually do some of my oil changes. ( Depending on time & weather) I mostly took it there because the trans seems awful noisy when I shift it & I wanted them to drain it & check for metal but, they wouldn't do that either. :bang:

Sorry, I misread your original post. Thought you'd gotten them to change it again. Obviously I'm no help to you here.

I was reading a mag called engine masters? they said with their testing on engines even with 7 quart pans 5 to 5.5 gave the best horsepower and didn't cause any harm.

I'd put in a windage tray before taking a chance on not having enough oil

Just another example of all dealers not being equal.
I took my GT in for oil change and check out the CEL which came on the day before. Oil change 26.xx (2.25 quart) and the CEL was a very small evap leak that didnt reoccur.
So on top of ordering it last Nov, Stickered for 29, 919 with the Ford polished bullits, bought for 27xxx ttl. I couldnt be happier with my dealer.

Who by the way has plenty of GTs now. When I went for oil change, 6 GTs and 8 v6s on the lot.

I myself would trust the oil change guy over the engineers at Ford. What do those dumb azz engineers know anyway? I hope the sarcasm is blantly obvious to everyone...

When I did my first oil change at 500 miles and the second at 2500 miles, I drained 6 quarts out and put six quarts in. Put a new filter on both times as well. Now when I check it, it's about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch low.

My money is with 6 quarts, just like the owners manual indicates.

I don't think 7 quarts will hurt you, it's a little on the high side, but probably OK. I wouldn't go with 8 quarts though.

You could always drain a quart.

6 quarts on mine reads almost perfect on the stick. I let my dealer do each oil change at the 5-10-15k etc... intervals only because I get a free 5 year 75K warranty. The dealer has put in 6 quarts each time they have done it, as shown on the paperwork. BTW Motorcraft Synthetic blend 5w20 is $1.94 qt. and the Motorcraft filter is $3.92 here at Walmart. I also keep a record on www.myford.fordvehicles.com and the dealer updates it with any work I have done. You can also add all the maintenance type stuff yourself too. It's a nice site to keep all you records on. Check it out

I changed mine and let it drip til no end, lol. Took 6.5 to fill to top mark. It was a little decieving to read as both sides were different by A 1/2 " on the dipstick at 6 qt.

7 is not going to harm it.

I can't find in the owners manual where it states how much oil to put in with an oil change. I have been putting in 5 quarts. 5 quarts puts the oil guage right in the middle. Should I be putting 6 quarts in?

Page 230 of the owner's manual (for 2006 (more pages than in the 2005 manual)):
http://2006-mustang-gt.com/guides-informat...Owner-Guide.pdf
reads that the V8 takes 6.0 quarts, and the V6 takes 5.0 quarts. On my first oil change (a V6) it took about 5.125 quarts to get the stick to read full. Again, this is getting the engine fully hot, and letting the oil settle into the oil pan overnight, thereby assuring an accurate level measurement.
I never let the engine get more than a quarter of a quart below the fill line, just in case I have a high sideways load on the engine (hard cornering). If you ran a full quart low, your sump might run dry with high lateral Gs. This probably is a bigger problem in the 4x4 arena, but just to be safe, keep it full.
