4.10 Gears and Warranty
Hey all,
Been lurkin these forums for over 4 years but barely post haha, anyhoo, im lookin to give my baby some extra push and i have been lookin at 4.10's (i drive an auto GTCS) but im very worried about voiding my warranty (i hear they cant void the whole thing, but i dont want my service refused if possible) if i get the Ford Racing 4.10's if i can get my dealer to install them will i still be covered? not necessarily the gears (i heard about a 12 mo. 12,000 mile registered warranty or somethin) but will i be pretty much in the clear when i get my car serviced?
thanks for any help

Magnuson vs. Moss, also known as the SEMA act requires a dealer to prove that the modifications performed to a vehicle contributed or directly caused a the malfunction before warranty service can be denied.
It is illegal for a dealer or servicing body to void your warrenty simply based on the presence of aftermarket equipment.
How this affects what you're trying to do is this. If you have gears installed and the install is wrong and it jacks up your axles...that's going to require you to pay out of pocket since the gear install contributed to, or directly caused the malfunction.
Lets say however that your front strut sheers in half. The presence of aftermarket gears in the vehicle could not likely even contribute to a strut failure. Therefore the dealer or servicing body would not be legally able to deny a warranty claim on the strut (assuming it's stock).
I hope that explains how it works for you. As long as you pick a reputable installer that knows what they're doing, and get the speedometer corrected at the same time, you shouldn't have any issues.

Like Jason said, the Moss-Magnuson Act offers consumer protections that prevent warranty coverage from being denied, unless aftermarket equipment caused the failure in question. FRPP gears have a 12/12 warranty, but only on the parts (not the labor). If said gears cause a rear end failure, warranty will not pick up the tab. However, unrelated failures (i.e. power windows, radio, computer, brakes, etc.) would be covered despite having aftermarket (including FRPP) gears installed. It all comes down to cause-and-effect.
I've had the FRPP 4.10's in my '07 GT Automatic since late 2006 when the car was brand spankin' new and never once worried about warranty as the factory 8.8" rear end with 31 spline axles are very stout. Even supercharged with dozens of passes at our local dragstrips doesn't cause me any concern about breaking stuff.

Do you already get warranty work performed at your dealership?
Do you have a good relationship with the service manager?
If the answer is yes to both, then I wouldn't worry about it.
They aren't going to know you put in 4.10 gears unless you break your rearend. Are you going to break your rearend with 4.10 gears?? I HIGHLY doubt it unless you're going to go FI and some crazy boost coupled with many drag runs.
