What about the costs difference to the wear on the engine vs the performance?

I tihnk 3.73s are good for me since 38 miles are freeway, then i have less than 1/4 mile off the higway to my house.
If I got a 1 pc DS and maybe UDPs, would that make up some of the difference of getting the 3.73s over the 4.10s in terms of acceleration performance?
I heard the 1pc DS spins up quicker cuz it has less rotational mass, and the UDPs would take some load off the engine....?
Would you guys trust a regular Ford dealer to install gears? Are they experienced enough? Or do I need to go to a performance shop like Evo?

My daily commute is 25 miles and only about 10 of that is at freeway speed, which during rush hour only averages about 50. Occassionally I do a mile or two at 70-75 so I'm going with 4.10's.
The driveshaft and the UDPs are definitely going to help IMO.
As for the Ford dealer, I'd certainly trust my dealer but I can't say that for ALL dealers. They should certainly be qualified enough to do the work. If you have a good service relationship with them and their rates are reasonable then it's probably good for the relationship and the warranty aspect to give the work to them. My dealer is also a FRPP dealer as well as an SVT specialist and a Diablo CMR tuner but they're pricey so I can't afford to give them ALL of my business. Start with a quote from both of them and then have a look at the relationship aspect and decide from there.

I have a good relationship with mine...never really had any problems with them. Haven't really had too much work for them...just the TSB on the fuel tank, but they handled it nicely. And one time they did a tire rotation and oil change when they thought I wanted one, but Ididn't and they didn't change me. So...I'll ask em about their prices. Do all Ford Dealers have a set price for certain jobs like gears?

Doug will do everything in his power to help those that need tuner help. I have his 93 race tune in my SCT along with Lidios two tunes. The throttle with Lidios tune is much quicker. You just blip it a little hard and it will jump four feet. Like driving a big block with six duces.
Doug will be my source from now on!
I have a 305/45/18 rear Nittos that gives me a final ratio of about 3:85. Close enough.

I once knew a guy with a Jeep wrangler and he was always messing around with his differential. It seemed like every weekend he as changing his gears, putting in lockers, and etc. Is it really that difficult to change the ring and pinion gear or is it just messy as hell and therefore a real PITA?

Sad to see Lidio is so full of himself or narrow minded. Apparently he had no problems taking your money in the first place did he? I have his tune with a 4:10 rear and had no objections. After all its my car not his.

Hey Bill,
Go back and read the 3rd entry in this thread. Even Doug suggests not going with the 4:10's and clearly suggests 3:55 or 3:73 for the auto. Give Lidio the right to his opinion before you hack him to death.

What is the point of this thread. People bash lidio because of what one guy says. We are not that shallow are we? It is funny that all knowing doug also doesn't recommend 4.10 for the auto's. If you question lidio, call him and ask him. Doug by the way will let you blow your car up because he doesn't ask questions afterall it is your car, do what you want. Thats not who I want working on my car. Lidio is in the business of building your car faster. He did have a guy install 4.10's in his 05 auto, and the guy came back ****ed off because his 1/4 mile times were slower. Lidio changed them to a 3.55 and the guy was happy. Lidio is not going to let you destroy your car, and just do as you ask. He is by far the most experienced in his field. If you have questions, go to the source and not everybody's opinions on these forums. I know this stuff about lidio because I live about two miles from his shop, and frequent there quite often. He has done a lot of work for me and guarantees the reliability, longevity, and performance of his work. That's what I want, not some guy who will just let me destroy my car.

Why not? Doug has no problem helping people no matter what they put in THEIR car. Its not about the gears. It is about help after the sale. In this case there was none! My statement stands. Was the guy just supposed to throw away his SCT and purchase another? And for your info Scott I do have two Lidio tunes and one of Doug's for the 410s. If I had to purchase another it would be from Doug in a heartbeat.

This was my whole point in starting the thread. What Lidio's reasoning was for stating "he didn't like 4.10 gears".

twoscoops, in reference to your original post. Why don't you just call and talk to lidio himself? He is very personable. I know from talking to him that he does recommend 4.10's for manuals if you plan to stay NA, to get the most out the car for drag racing. If it is a daily driver, that is something else to consider. You need to ask yourself, will I be taking this car to the track, or am I just looking for more performance on my daily driver that will never see the track. He will help you decifer what is best for your situation. I am not refering to you in my previous post, just people who pass judgement and condemn people based on someones opinion. Thats all.

Doug sent me new tunes for the 4.10's and I didn't even buy my Xcal from him. That is Customer Service.

I have an Automatic. Again....my point was the fact that he refused to adjust my tune for the 4.10's because he didn't recommend them for automatics. I didn't ask his opinion on gearing I asked for a tune adjustment. The fuel tables need to be adjusted when you change gears.
Furthermore, i highly doubt (anike7) changing gears will blow your engine.

Not to butt in, but my point was the fact that Lidio wouldn't help me with my tune (that he sold me) after I put in the 4.10's because he did not recommend putting those gears in. That's not his decision to make. I wanted the 4.10's and put them in...I'm more than happy with them. My point is the fact that i got "0" customer service from Alternative Auto.

Hey Lee and Bill (Mongoose),
I have been dealing with Lidio At AA for about 1 yr now. My belief is you are misinterpeting Lidio's more conservative approach to tuning as lack of customer service. Lidio is not a mass internet emailer of tunes for our stangs. His tunes are very good but somewhat subdued for the sake of safety and durability. Go to his website and read his "KANT". He is not trying to give every last horsepower or ft/lb of torque with his tunes. He clearly states that. He has tested gears in our stangs and come up with his recommondation for the manual and auto. His tunes support his views. (Doug seems to agree)
All of us on TMS are from the 4 corners of the country. We all drive in different daily conditions from the dry deserts, to humid subtropics, to the cold and snowy northeast using all different grades of fuel. His approach is middle of the road that works for all of us.
I am lucky that I am only a couple of hours south of him. In my conversations with him I have found him to be polite, knowledgable, and very helpful. He is more than willing to tweek his tunes to your stang on his dyno where he can see all of the variables with your car. They are not created equal. I am not trying to pick a fight with anyone here, just hate to see a very good tuner get bashed for sticking to his beliefs.
