i really want to go old school with some mags / white letter tires like on the below 66. all ive heard is about how i cant go smaller than stock diameter rim becasue its bad. but if the overall diameter of the wheel / tire ends up being the same , what difference does it make? just a smaller wheel with taller tire. am i missing something here?

Offset and Brake Rotor Clearance are the issues you face. The "Old School" cars had near 0 or 6 mm offset, the '06 is more like 30mm as I recall, and the old ones often used 10" disc or 9" drum brakes, the '06 uses rotors on the front that are just over 12" diameter and then there's the caliper. 15" might clear on the rear with the smaller brakes.
You should be able to find the look you want with 16" or 17" wheel diameters. Cooper & B F Goodrich and others make the RWL tires, American Racing makes some nice "mags" too.
If you had the V6 brakes, which in all honestly *will* work (bracket and smaller rotor is all you gotta swap) then you can get a 16". They were, after all, on the GTs of the previous models, they just made the rotors bigger for the newer cars as they got past the Fox and SN95s...
If you had the plate steel, 'dremel', welder? and skillz to do it, you can make your own bracket and put whatever brake caliper/pad/rotor system you wanted on the car and run a 13" up front, but I think that might be carrying it a bit far...
Ooh, wait... '66 you say? DRUM BRAKES FOR THE WIN, small wheels aren't a problem now!
