Honestly, I say neither (based on my personal preferences).
Ford comments: For the money you're going to be putting out anyways, I'd go straight to a 2010 or 2011 GT500 and skip the 2009 completely.
Bimmer comments: If it weren't the Bangle-ized 5 series, I'd say M5 over the Mustang in a heart beat. But I just can't get over the looks of that generation, not to mention luxury Euro cars have a much shorter "shelf life" compared to domestic cars. The new 5 series is just incredibly stunning, which makes the outgoing model look that much worse...and old. But...it's still an M5.
But since you didn't ask for my personal opinion, my suggestion based on the two cars you picked is the M5. Whatever you choose, enjoy!

But the new 5 series is based on the 7 series platform, and much more lux oriented than sporty. Better looking, I'll give you that, but not supposed to drive quite as sharp.
This past generation M5, while still techno overloaded, is an amazing car, and can hang with many sports cars and coupes, but still give the utility of a midsize sedan.

So many people are haters! UMMMM A 2009 GT500 or an 2009 M5!? DUUUHHH the M5! I'm a hard core muscle car guy but I also love BMW's! Why not consider a 2010-2011 GT500?

I ended up with the M5. the car is so quite inside you dont feel yourself going 100MPH. in the gt500 at 100 i thought the hood was going to fly off. I still love the GT500's but the interior and build quality won it over for me and of coarse the V10
Right now i am looking for another mustang(4th one). ill pick up and post pics soon. i wish the germans built the gt500 that thing would be the ultimate driving machine.....
