Look up the ZR1, it has been produced every once in a while sort of how the old SVT brought the Cobra Rs. The latest ZR1 is a dandy with a base MSRP around $107K. Ask yourself if there is a need for a Corvette SS.

no we do't need a vette ss, but Gm needs more variety of cars, to draw in more customers to keep itself afloat. im not saying GM has very little cars, its got tons of different models, but I am sayng it would get lots of attention from a c\vette with an ss badge.

I'd have to go with the Viper in this if I had to choose one, but for that kind of money I'd build a car to smoke both of them and still have money to burn.
Vettes never were seriously considered for the SS badge they always got Z designations just like all of GM's top dogs back in the day, Z06, ZR1, ZL1, Z11, Z16 etc or something comparible. Zora Arkus-Duntov would probably roll in his grave at the thought of an SS (which started as just an appearance package only) badge on a vette. It was to him like comparing a Zweihänder to a rapier. Crude unweildly vs svelte and nimble. Vette faithful would probably burn those at the stake for doing so. Unfortunately Z codes took a plastering such as the SS's with the Z34 and Z36 and then the trucks carrying it.

The article is dated February 22, 2007. No Corvette has been badged or projected as a SS.
That was probably a code name for a test engine or test mule.

Z71, Z66 etc were all a joke too more an appearance package than anything else. Nothing special drivetrainwise over a standard 4x4 silverado. The only z truck package that was substantially different was the one for the S-10 ZR2. It's the closest thing GM has done with the equivalence of the raptor.
The Z28 of yesteryear wasn't necessarily king of the street in relation to SS's. The Camaro ZL1 was. Sure it would beat an LT1 SS but would get whacked by one of the big block cars in a straight line. It was built with an eye towards Trans-Am (the race conglomeration) with the 4 wheel disc options, stiffer suspension options, and a 7K RPM 302. It did quite well in that arena too. Then Z28 kind of just meant V8 up until the SS's arrived and was relegated to entry level V8. Although the fastest LS1 powered Camaro's were Z28's. 1SC "stripper" cars, such as mine, usually were faster than the option laden SS's despite the taller gears and a farce of advertised hp differences. I'm glad to see Z28's (hopefully) retake the top dog position.
