Bullitt vs Accord

From Motor Trend recent test data:

2008 Bullitt ... 2008 Accord 6-MT

0-60: 5.0 sec ... 5.7 sec
1/4 mile: 13.7 sec @ 102.7 mph ... 14.0 sec @ 102.5 mph
60-0: 127 feet ... 127 feet
Lateral acceleration: 0.87 g ... 0.88 g
MT Figure Eight: 26.4 sec @ 0.52 g ... 26.7 sec @ 0.67 g
Price: $34,235 ... $28,945

I find it astonishing that a 2008 Accord coupe V6 6-speed can almost keep up with a special edition Mustang Bullitt rated @ 315 horsepower. Notice the trap speed of the Accord is almost identical to the Bullitt. Front wheel drive cars are getting faster!

That's exactly what Honda wants you to think.

I won't be buying one, even in highland green

It's hard to deny actual performance numbers like these. And the Honda is a great car who has had many happy (and repeat) customers. The Accord is quite a classy car as well having a handful of power on tap. But, of course it doesn't have the heritage that the Mustang does for whatever it's worth. There were days when muscle cars owned the streets of performance. Not so anymore. A stately-looking four door sedan can easily keep up with the Bullitt (like the Accord, Cadillac, and many others).

I don't trust magazine numbers all that much... but most decent V6 cars can keep up with Mustangs. Face it guys, the Mustang isn't really a fast car off the showroom floor.

Nice numbers from the Honda, but so what? If numbers were the only thing needed to make up one's mind between two cars then I'd say they need a hobby of some sort.

The cars aren't anything at all alike in terms of personality and I'm sure the Honda people enjoy the similarities in performance with a historically recognizable American icon.

after racing with the Accord you can brag by saying "how many MPG you get?" lol but seeing things like this make me somewhat optimistic about the future Maybe in 10 years we will have an affordible 12 sec hybrid !

Naw, thats fast, its just that our perceptions have become warped over time, and for most people, this is just academic (read bench racing). I'll bet even on this enthusiast's site the people who don't utlitze the full capability of the car (some of the time) are in the majority.

I won't argue that increases in handling and braking aren't a good thing since that goes hand in hand with saftey, but acceleration is a different matter - it's a nice thing to have, but in the overall scheme of things, the average driver doesn't need a car that does more than about 15 or 16 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

+1 on all counts. I wouldn't want a daily driver any faster than my '08 Mustang GT - I don't track race and there are plenty of people in quarter million dollar cars around here that go stupid fast, so who am I going to impress? Nissan's of all models fly past me, there's nothing to gain by putting them in their place. I enjoy my car, I don't really want everyone else on the road to enjoy it.

Those test numbers for the Bullitt seem off; they got better braking and quarter mile times when they tested a plain Mustang GT thats cheaper than the Accord.
13.5 sec @ 103.6 mph
125 ft 60-0

People automatically think that because its's a Honda and a V6 that it gets so much better gas mileage, but the truth is it gets about gas mileage the same as a Mustang with a V8. It's the same thing with the turbo 4's that are putting out ~300hp. You have to burn the same amount fuel to make same amount of power it seems.

So with the Accord, you get slower accelerating FWD car, with a smaller engine that gets the about same MPG as a V8 Mustang ? If you get just a Mustang GT, it's cheaper or about the same as price as the Accord. So what's the advantage of the Accord ?
