I love the looks of a Cobra II.I wanna see one with an 03-04 Cobra motor or something faster, that would be sick.
I have no interest in owning a Mustang made between 1974 and 2004. Not knocking them but I just dont care for the body styling.
No contest, 69 BOSS 429.
For those who might enjoy a little history of the Boss 429 this is paraphrased from Car Craft, January 1970.
The 429 Mustang was created only to legalize its use in NASCAR (where it dominated) by having 500 models in cars available to the public. It makes it power at HIGH rpms.
The hemi heads with huge ports and valves were not conducive to a street motor and it was never designed to be one. The Boss 429 (and Boss 302) were great underachievers on the street due to considerations for production and warranty. The 429 came with a 735cfm carb and had a massive weight valve train. As a result it didnt make near the power in rpm ranges for street ( 3000 to 6000 rpm) as other smaller engines of the time. Crane ran a dyno on it with the solid lifter cam retarded 10 degrees to make a peak hp of 386 @ 6000rpm.
FoMoCo had a corporation Product Acceptability Standard that required ALL cars sold to the public must run in traffic in forth gear smoothly at 20, 60 or 80 mph, as well as noise levels. Meeting the PAS hurt the total package (esp acceleratoion) of the Boss. Interesting to note is Chrysler nor GM had such rigid constraints.
The ABSOLUTE best 1/4 mile time I ever saw in a magazine was 13.60@106. Most mags reported low 14s. Folger Ford of Monrovia Calif offered a parts package to get the Boss Moving. It included Logghe Traction bars, modified 4spd with Hurst shifter, Line-Loc, 4.57 gears, Doug Thorley headers, flex fan plus igniyion and carb mods.
. Also included were drum brakes on the front to replace the discs, which along with the headers removed 105 lbs from the car.
On street tires it ran 13.5@109.48
with 10.5 Goodyear slicks it went 12.56@111.2
and with slicks and open headers 12.32@113.49
With smaller port heads and valves it could have been the Ultimate street machine.

thunder road , to add to your history lesson. As an original owner of a 1969 BOSS 429 I was awestruck the first time I saw it in a magazine add,I had to have one,and my dad agreed to cosign the loan to buy it. The BOSS was no slouch out of the box,but with headers and borrowed slicks ran a best of 12.48 at Maple Grove dragway in 1970. Fast foreward to today,my son Aaron and I just finished a rehab with some not so stock mods.I think it probobly still meets all FOMOCO driveability reguirements but is assembled the way they should have done it in 1969.(well maybe, except for the noise levels through the headers and 3in exhaust) the power curve is almost endless.pics at www.1969boss429.com enjoy

I would imagine with the tecnological advances the last 35 years I would imagine anyone fortunate enough to have one could build a monster street car.
I especially like the fastback carrying all the way back to the lip spoiler. (would like to see one produced for the 05) The side profile is just a work of art.

If you get one get a 03. and, I LOVE the marauders, gorgeous cars. Did you consider a procharger for it?

Hmmmm..... well being that I was born at the end of the musclecar years, grew up in the 80's and 90's and dreamed in the new millenium, I'd have to say 04 Cobra. Unless of course somebody were to add 70' Mach with a 428 and shaker hood. Then I'd have a tough time considering. The Boss cars were cool, but I'm just not a huge Boss fan.
man id have to go with the Boss, though i've always wanted a '69 or '70 Boss 302. not as fast in a straight line, but lighter on it's feet. i love new cobras, but Boss is the best performance line and best surname for a mustang ever. i think they should make a new boss (302 cammer?)
As the Highlander said "There can be only one " The original Boss cars were built so Ford could qualify the engine for Nascar. Which they did,and proceeded to kick everyones a--es for 2 seasons. Why even King Richard Petty jumped ship from chrysler so he could win some races driving Boss 429 powered ford products.I love the new overhead cam Ford engines,my Mercury Marauder wouldn't be the same without it,but,it will never have the raw race appeal as The Boss429 in my 69 with its dual quads and massive magnesium valve covers. Not to mention the sound, totally awesome, :worship: 'There can be only one'
