Here's a long story short:
Two guys from work, after having seen my '05 GT last week, decided we should have our own little race: my stock GT against their Jaguar XK8 Coupé (a car I've dreamed about for years) and BMW 645Ci Coupé. Their cars were also bone stock and all 3 cars had automatic transmissions.
American vs. European muscle!
We went to an empty strip of asphalt close to the office, marked about 500 yards between the start and the finish lines, and had 3 races, 1-on-1.
They were arguing about who should go first against me, so I asked them to race against each other first. As expected, the BMW won by about 3-4 car lengths (sorry, we couldn't time ourselves), but both cars seemed very fast, which got me worried. Next, it was me against the BMW: he won again, this time only by about 1-2 car lengths. Finally, to my relief, I won my race against the Jag, also by 1-2 lengths.
Here's some info on the other 2 cars (manufacturers' brochures):
1. BMW 645Ci Coupé:
weight: 3730 lbs
engine: 4.4 l V8, 333 hp/6100 rpm, 332 lb.ft/3600 rpm
0-62 mph: 5.6 sec.
2. Jaguar XK8 Coupé:
weight: 3705 lbs
engine: 4.2 l V8, 300 hp/6000 rpm, 310 lb.ft/4100 rpm
0-62 mph: 6.4 sec.
I don't really condone street racing, especially not with such cars, even though we did it on an unused road, but I'd sure give it another try at the track, or even do a few laps on a circuit!
P.S.: for the money I've paid for my GT and the smile it puts on my face every day, I'm still convinced I couldn't have made a better choice!

vs the BMW, it should be a driver's race, stock for stock
maybe a manual would have helped?????Doesn't the 645 have like a 7 speed "super-fast shifting" auto tranny? I can tell you that whatever it is, it is going to be better than what is in the Mustang. I know it's at least a 6 speed which would help it too.

I was expecting him to win, mainly because of that high-tech transmission. I had a very similar one on my previous car (the 2.5 l turbo Volvo S60) and I can tell you, it's a great piece of engineering! But like you said, a manual gearbox would have made a difference!
