Went to the dealer to see a 05 torch red (V6) today. I wanted to see how the color looked on the 05 in person, since that is the color that I ordered. They had a 04 torch red cobra in the showroom. The salesman asked if I wanted to take it for a spin, so I did. I was very tempted to buy and let my order go. The cobra would be about 4500 more than what I have ordered. I can't decide which one I would like better. The cobra or the torch red GT that I ordered in June which who knows when I will ever get it.

Need some input guys ...

Depends on what is most important to you. Overall the 2005 will be nicer, higher quality in general, etc. But the Cobra has nicer seats, and it's considerably faster. If speed is important to you, the Cobra is worth considering.

But supposing you decide a Cobra is for you, don't get a 2004 unless you have a burning need for one of the special colors only available in 04 (orange, screaming yellow, mystichrome). You can get 03's cheaper. I paid less than $24k for my 2003 Cobra with 3k miles on the odo. I had an 05 GT on order, but decided that I didn't want to go to a slower car (from my 95 GT). Horsepower is very important to me... it may not be for you.

Good luck with whatever you choose, they're both very nice cars.

Dave

The 05 is better in EVERY way ....Except power of course B) . Comparing to my Bullitt the 05 "Smokes" it in handling, power, interior(Except seats) driving comfort, power transmission and NVH.

See if you can get one of the deals where you are first in line for the 2007-8 cobra if you buy this one.

When I drove the cobra, the front seat (bottom part) seemed to be tilted up a little to much for my comfort. I wasn't able to adjust it any further down to make it more confortable. I sat in the 05 and didn't seem to have that problem ...

Did anyone notice this or am I nuts...

I would definitely go for the 05. Nicer in everyway, and with the $4500 you would save on the GT, you can get a blower and just about equal the hp. Sounds like a no-brainer to me.

With a blower, the GT would just about equal the power of a *stock* Cobra . Most people who buy and 03/04 Cobra do it because it's too easy to take it to over 500 horsepower, not to leave it stock .

Right now an 05 GT costs almost exactly the same as an 04 Cobra, so it's a wash in terms of cash. Really comes down to whether you want the new body style, or horsepower. I love the way the GT looks, especially from the front. Good thing...

Also, my wife keeps telling me that she like the 04 style better because it looks more modern and aerodynamic. She said the 05 looks like a angry animal... I guess you could take that as a compliment. I personally think that each car looks good in its own way...

Jeff, one car will give you bragging rights to almost any car on the road, and the other is better in every other respect and will probably be more fun to drive. As well, it has enough power to smoke 95% of what's out there.

Regardless of how nice the Cobra is, and how fast it is, its still the outgoing model. I think you will regret buying it once the new style really hits the streets in large numbers. Straight line speed isn't everything.

I faced the same choice. I've driven every mustang model including the Cobra, Mach 1. I've also driven the new 05 GT. There is no doubt the Cobra is fast, but I'll chose the 05 every time.

I'd opt for the cobra.

1. You are getting a huge discount that will cover the first year of depreciation
2. Cobra is faster
3. Cobra will depreciate much slower (Just sold my 1996 Cobra vert for $12,500, bought it new for $26,500. Comparible GT's were selling for 1/2 that)
4. You get a cool SVT certificate to hang on your wall

In all seriousness, go with your gut and never look back.

Unless you have driven both a 04 Cobra and a 05 GT, I'd be hesitant to state flat out that the 05 will handle better than the Cobra. The IRS should give the advantage to the Cobra. But I have not driven the 05 yet, so it's just an educated guess here. I will say my Cobra blows away my 99 GT in the handling department. But then again, the 05 should blow away the 99 in handling.
Anyone here driven both?

I have driven both.............
What i would like to know is how on earth are you payibg $4500 more for a Cobra....they are giving them away ...not to mention the $2500 rebate!

I have an 04 Mach 1
I had a 03 GT
And i have test drove both the 04 Cobra....and 05 GT

To me you would have to be RETARTED to go with a GT over a COBRA!
put it this way...no matter how you cut the cake...its still a BASE GT!
in about 8 months theyll be EVERYWHERE under the sun!

Go with the Cobra.....

I would have but when i bought my Mach back in May there was no $2500 rebate availble for the snake...I was upside downon my GT trade so i went with the Mach....

05 is a nice car BUT I would take a Mach over it....let alone a Snake!

I have. I'd say they were quite close. I drove them a few months apart so it was hard to compare back to back, but the 05 definately could have a slight edge (it really handled very very well). The mags have said that it does in fact handle better then the Cobra. They have instrumented testing equipment and professional drivers that would probably be able to make such a claim.

I'm just happy that the 05 handles at least as well as the top of the line Cobra.

How is an '05 going to be slower than a '95GT? Unless you've got some significant mods done, that's not the case.

thanks Dan. I can't wait to test drive the 05 GT and see how I think they compare!

Depends what your final goal is.

The Cobra engine already has forged internals, better
connecting rods, an iron block, bigger fuel system, etc.

It might get very expensive to go over 500hp, or maybe even
400hp, safely with a supercharged '05 GT engine.

Based on the magazines and forums, 500hp seems semi-routine
with the Cobras, and 600 or more is possible with a blower swap.

Check out the recent issues of MM&FF.

I'm having a heck of a time deciding myself.
