Everyone and their mother has been raving about the Mr. Clean Autodry. So I broke down and bought one (thinking nothing can be better than doing the actual wash and then the fun-esque of drying witha towel), however, the darn thing leaves soap marks EVERYWHERE. I mean it looks great from far away (mind you I have a black car) but you get up close, you see these rainbow color streaks everywhere. I have done this twice now and it has done it both times...WHY?

Here are my steps for washing the car (Let me know if I am doing something wrong here):
  • Rinse car without AutoDry
  • Soap car with normal car soap (no AutoDry)
  • Rinse car w/ no AutoDry
  • Rinse car again, WITH AutoDry
  • Soap Car w/ AutoDry
  • Rinse w/ AutoDry
  • Final step on AutoDry (I don't know what it is called, the drying poo that is sprayed everywhere)

When you soap the car, do you scrub it around a bit? That may help...and probably just leave out the non-AutoDry part, if you're going to use the AutoDry.

I never really used the full AutoDry system...I bought it just to try the water filtering part (the final step), as the water here is kinda hard. That's all that last step is...just a fine mist of filtered water.

The self-drying is done because the soap creates a sheeting action, as opposed to beading. The soap has also sort of been found to be slightly on the acidic side (sort of been found, as in, I've only read one online account of someone doing a litmus test).

Turtle wax car wash (comes in small packets) in warm water. Use a sponge to apply the turtle wax suds to the car finish. Spray off with a hose ( do not use the nozzle) just let the water flow out naturally. Use several old cotton t shirts or cotton towels to wipe up the rinse water. Next step do the waxy thing.

I had the exact same problem as you; my stang, like yours, is a dark color. IMO, it's a decent product until you come to the DI water rinse. It just doesn't have the pressure to rinse all the soap completely. The first time I used it, it left all sorts of soap streaks that were hideous up close. I had to use a clay bar to remove the worst of them and then had to rewax those areas. If I were you, I'd ditch the thing and get a refund. I mean, if you can't get a product to work like it's supposed to after 2 uses, what does that tell you about its quality? BTW, I bought mine at Target and they gave me a refund on the spot, w/o any hassle. Good luck.

Hey 68notch (I don't know your name, sorry).... I bought mine at Target as well, but it has been about 1 month or so ago, I don't think they will refund that, I wish...haha.

I think the thing is a piece of shii'te, as I had to re-wash the car this morning all over again!

I hear that...it's a total pile. I should've known, though, if it sounds too good to be true ("you'll never need to use a towel again") it probably is. Hope your car gets back to normal soon.

i have a black car and just washed it today with the MC autodry and had no issues..what the real problem with the inconstant results is the one obvious difference between us all. The mineral and calcium in the water.

My Mr clean can handle mine but it does kille the filters fast.. some other places may have more than the filter can handle.

Try not to use sponges, the holes hold dirt and small rocks and some sponges actually are abrasive to begin with.

Hughk...I don't know, I actually was just at Walmart the other day and bought some 100% cotton towels and some Blue Oval (or something like that) soap for washing it, I will just stick with that!

Mine works great, just make sure the car is fully rinsed clean before doing the spot free rinse at the end.

My solution was to trade in my black 03 for a mineral gray 05. No problems with spots now. Actually, my MrClean AD worked for three washes, then it left spots.

I have it on the shelf now.
