Here is a good car cleaning article I found on 5.0 Mustang's website. It covers all the basics pretty well and the chick is not so bad either . The only thing I don't fully agree with is that they say not to use a sponge. I use a sponge and just make sure to keep rinsing it out. Also, sponges are cheap so I just throw mine out after a few washes or if it hits the ground and get a new one. Let me know what you think.

Personally I use a sponge as you do and always rinse it off well. I've heard of the same problems they describe about a sponge with washmits. Frankly theres no way to avoid dirt. Its a fact of life. Just get rid of it off of the sponge or might ASAP, and if its too bad, toss it. The article was interesting but I think a lot of the other members on the site may have better ideas for a better clean.
P.S. The Mr. Clean Autodry system cuts back on a lot of the dirt that get on the sponge from rinsing it in the bucket.

You're right, there is no way to totally eliminate dirt. One process that helps and I am sure most people do is starting at the top and working down. This way the spots that have the most dirt (the bottom 1/3 or so of the car) get washed last and you don't drag that dirt back up on higher surfaces. So far that has worked great for me.
