I painted my hood and my spoiler flat black and don't know how long I should wait before it's alright to wash them. Also, has anyone had experience with flat paint, and what products work well to clean/protect them? Thanks.

 

i have my car painted with rat rod flat black, and i use turtle wax ice to get it looking good after i wash it...

my paint, you can wax with carnauba, but it says it will shine a little and not look so glossy if you do.

be sure you can use carnuba on your paint before you do, otherwise it wont come off and will look white

i would say give it at least 4-5 days before you wash it or mess with it, let it gass off really well first....

 

You aren't supposed to wax fresh paint for quite a while, more than 4-5 days. You should be ok to wash it and everything now, just hold off on waxing it for a while. I just wax mine normally with whatever wax I feel like using on the rest of the car.

 

Thanks guys. I wasn't planning on waxing it because I was told that it isn't good for flat paint. Has anyone put a coat of flat clear on? How well does that work?

I washed it today, I didn't really get to see the outcome of it, but I dried the hood as soon as the washing process was over, and it seemed to hold up well... The spoiler definitely needs another coat.

 

I'll have another flat black part on my car soon and I plan to treat it like normal too.

 

Did they use a flat clear when after painting the black, if not, if you only shot a flat single stage over it, the paint will fade, anything that you apply over to protect won't really protect it will eat away faster.

If you did uses a flat clear do not use any wax, you need a fill in glaze instead, Maquires # 7.

 

So spray it with clear and then don't wax it? Or would you just suggest respraying it with a couple extra coats and leaving it be? Thanks Ed.

 

You have to use a special clear , I can get you the correct info for what to use. You also got to watch your flash time (window time between coats) for any base coat you only have about 48 hrs to cover, if it passes that time the paint will react and cause cracking.
Send me a PM with what you used if you did it yourself, and I'll write you back a step by step on what to do and how.
If your good with your hands you can do it with the right instructions.

Why would you not use wax with a ss? That doesn't make any sense. Why would a wax eat away paint?

 

That would be fresh paint, whenever you paint something you need to give it the proper time to cure, paints use reducers, reducer is a solvant, it usally takes sometimes over 30 days for a paint to really cure.
Wax seals, wax is good down the line after paints are cure, you wax to seal your shine and top coat.
If you wax over fresh paint, the paint is harder to cure, and when it does, it will fade. Better let me use the word shrink.

 

We used Krylon Rust-Tough Semi-Flat Black spray paint. You have your PM/Email preferences to "Admin only" so I couldn't send you one.
