Never had a car that I would even consider cleaning the engine compartment.
So, how does one go about cleaning the engine compartment. I haven't added any mod (yet) under the hood, but it needs cleaning.
Any 05 owners that have advice would greatly be appreciated.

see autopia.org for some good suggestions.
I used the suggestion that included use a diluted bleche white, and armor all foam. covered obvious places where you do not want direct spray with aluminum foil.
sprayed the wesley's blech white. rinsed down the compartment, going lighter where aluminum foil was placed. then used the armor all foamy . see this link

however, there are alot of approaches. the autoglym engine cleaner looks pretty good

I use meguiars plastic polish. It works on the dash and all the black rubber in the engine compartment. Makes it shine real nice and doesn't attract dirt.

I use Greased Lightning's Orange Blast cleaner and degreaser. Imho it's far superior in cleaning power compared to Simple Green, doesn't cause problems with plastics, and smells nice to boot.
I generally follow up with Armor All foaming tire shine. (sorry, no pics, as it's currently raining so hard I'm expecting to see motorboats on my street any time now
Edit: got a photo

What do you guys cover in the compartment so as not to get it wet/dirty? I have my engine bay rustproofed and they'll be a lot of crap coming out when I clean it.....

Picked up at a local auto parts store (Pep Boys if I remember correctly)
Here's the manufacturer's page:
http://www.glblast.com/products.html#Cleaner
The stuff i've been using is the auto/shop orange degreaser about halfway down the list.
