hello all!

my 98 mustang is about to take a dump, it has 160000 miles and the check engine stays on constantly.... it cost me about 400 each time it lights up... anyhoo,

i 'm thinking of buying an 06 model, BUT I am scared pooless of driving in winter weather... my 98 was horrible in the snow, and wouldn't go up a hill with 1/2 inch of snow on the road.... i usually end up parking it about 10x during the winter b/c of this! I can only afford one car!

So my question is: How do the new mustangs handle in snow/ice/rain/sleet, etc. ? I spoke with a car dealer and he said they are much better , but he may be trying to make a sell!

any advice would be much appreciated!! thanks!

These models do have traction control and anti-locks. With a good set of studded winters you may survive. I'm planning on putting my 05 GT up for the winter so she doesn't see any salt. (In Vermont they use salt on the roads like they're a bland batch of french fries).

I drove my 98 Mustang in winter. No problems, Nokian Winter Tires all around. Winter driving just means going slower than normal. From all the advertising etc the new mustangs operate better in winter than the previous models. I will put my winter tires back on the new mustang as an extra precaution.

This has been discussed before. However, I have a 97 T-Bird. She could not get out of the driveway in any amount of snow. Last year, I put TC on and got the Pony out with no problem. My driveway is sloped kinda steep and is black top, so it is real slick.

I had no problems in snow. Of course, now that my daily beater is working, I won't drive the pony in the snow. Ironic, the pony is a better snow car than the beater, but I still drive the beater in the snow.

Well, my Ford Mustang 2005 Canadian brochure says "Ford ... built for life in Canada".

I have been wondering the same thing about driving a Mustang in the winter. I will likely store it for the winter, and use my Corolla for winter driving ... or I could hibernate.

I bought my 89 gt vert while in Cali. When I transfered back to Chicago it was my only car. The first snow scared the s@#! out of me! Even if I let the clutch out without touching the gas the tires would just spin and I ended up against the curb.
So I bought a winter beater for $75 and drove that till spring. When it got towed from my work lot I sent the towing company the title instead of paying $150 to get it back. When my 06 GT gets here it goes in bay 3 of my garage till spring. A friends' dad had a trans am with traction control. He called my friend from an intersection saying his car would not move. He told his dad to turn off traction controll and slide it home and leave it. I don't know how the mustangs are with traction control but either way its gonna stink when OTHER people are sliding towards you to check out your awesome Mustang!
Look in the under $500 car section of the paper.
Just my two cents

A perfect opportunity to tell one of my fave mustang storys.

[sophia from golden girls mode]

Picture this:

December 2003.

Comming outa church

3 Inches of unplowed snow on the ground

A Ford Taurus (parents) infront of me paving the way

Me a stock 94 V-6 with BFGoodrich Radial T/A's keepin up pace.

Taurus decides to take the unplowed 4 lane with median strip expressway home.

I cringe at what I expect will happen next.

I take the right hand turn onto the expressway slowly no problems.

I keep up with that Taurus even as it pulls 35-40.

Suddenly a car comes out infront of me doin 10.

I whip that Mustang into the left lane like a rocket car on rails without any back end sliding.

Suddenly I'm the one setting the pace for that Taurus the whole way home doin 45.

It's not about the car really. It's about the tires, throttle, brakes, and drivers common sence. Plus it's extremly fun feeling that steering wheel vibrate. I thought it was going to fall off the shaft as much as it was bouncing around.

I have 2 summer cars and 2 winter cars. my mustang is in the garage in the winter. when I was young I drove my mustangs in the snow. I did have studded tires one year but we cant have those in wi. anymore. when you do get snow tires remember, skinny tires work better in snow.

My 02 GT vert drove OK in the snow with the 16's on it. I drove it last winter in 6" of snow in Iowa without any problems. I'm hoping my new 05 GT will be as good. I sold my "winter" car.

I had a 86 which was horrible in the snow mainly because the front was so much heavier than the rear (I know some women like that) anyway, the front\rear ratio of the 05's are very close which should make them much better in the snow.

It's just not worth it to me - but then the Detroit area usually has relatively severe winters.
I say get the new Mustang and keep your ears open for a 2nd 'beater' for the frozen months. You can be one of the best drivers - but sometimes you can't do anything when others don't know how to handle snow and they plow into you. Plus the wear and tear... I'm not doin it (driving when it's icy).
But now I really can't do without my 'Peg'. She makes driving to/from work soooo much nicer. The 3 to 4 months that she is garaged will be hard to accept.
