Let's see... I just started noticing it a little while ago, so maybe 9000-9500?

Wonder what would happen if I added 5 more ounces of friction modifier.

We are both in this window, too:

TSB-06-9-11
3-valve lash adjuster

9k miles? Wow, I'll probably find another excuse for the gears way before then.

Adding 5 more is a good idea, if there's room.

I doubt we're part of that TSB. Attachment 23071
Our cars were built within a couple weeks of that date range of affected engines. I'm betting our engines were built way before that and were just sitting in crates until they were ready to be installed.

Oh yes... ENGINES built in that window, not cars... good.

I had that TSB done last year. They changed the clutch packs. It got rid of the moan, but it came back last month.
Some guys throw in 4 oz of friction modifier and it goes away, so I did the same, and it went away, but I could only fit in about 3 oz until it started to come out of the hole. Now, I just hear it slightly. If it gets louder, I guess I'll have to take it back in or I might change with Royal Purple which advertises that it already has friction modifiers in the mix. Tom, it's not going to hurt to see if you can throw in some friction modifier first to see what happens.

Read it's pretty cheap, like $10 or so. If it works, it'll be a cheap fix!

Yeah, it's cheap.

I guess it's 4 oz like Mike mentioned, not 5.

In my case, along with the TSB fix, they also changed the ring and pinion gear due to gear whine, which turned out to be the transmission, that's another story, but, I noticed when I pulled the plug, there was a lot of metal shavings on it. For me, it might be better just to clean out all the old stuff, and refill with royal purple.

There's not a drain plug in these rear-ends is there? Or are you talking about the fill plug?

I don't feel like messing with the cover. Now if there was a drain plug, I'd order Royal Purple right now from Summit for both of us!

I guess you'll have to order more parts since I know you're not going to pay $10 for handling for just that little bottle.

No drain plug, the fill plug had metal shavings on it. I already have Royal purple I ordered last year.

Need something?

It shouldn't be much more at the dealer.

No, I don't. You might as well just go to Ford for it.

Was kidding... even $5 shipping is too much. Oh, sorry... handling.

O.K. this will be my last comment on this issue. Mike, all the stuff you mentioned about getting on this site is free. Bill just supplied a manual link and noone even asked!! As far as the discounts on items, Well lets just say, there's not too much in the way of "parts".while I do agree that giving back to the site is a good thing, the amount of frustration this is causing you is just not worth it IMO. Having italicized name is cool, but in the end will anyone really care ? Again JMO and I'm done!

Hey guys - been forever since I chimed in in this thread

I had the rear end moan - I added friction modfier myself and within a month it came back

So I just had the TSB work done about two weeks ago (at the only dealership I trust for service)

Everything went great - no sound in slow speed turns anymore - they even fixed the fuel pump/long cruise TSB and I tested it out last thursday on the turnpike and that *** hesitation is GONE.

My advice - try the modifier yourself (buy at the dealer parts counter) and if it doesn't work, have the dealership fix.

CAUTION!!!!
That stuff stinks to high heaven like you would NEVER believe - I picked my bottle up at lunch and had the still sealed bottle in my car. When I came out to drive home I could smell it. Yeah its that bad.

Do NOT put it in without wearing gloves and try like heck NOT to get any one you (or anything else for that matter)
