The Mustang Will Get a 10-Speed Automatic - One of These Days

Last year, General Motors and Ford announced they would join forces to co-develop nine- and 10-speed automatic transmissions. The units will be going into both front- and rear-wheel-drive vehicles including cars, crossovers, SUVs and trucks. Fuel economy should be improved by the additional cogs at the top end and response should benefit from less space between gears.

A few days ago, Automotive News put this little nugget at the end of one of its articles: "The Mustang eventually will get Ford's new 10-speed automatic transmission."

This nonsense needs to stop. There's no reason for a normal car to have 10 speeds. It's going to be searching for gears nonstop. 7 is the max there should be. 10 is just ridiculous and more complications to break. How much lower can the rpm's be in 10th vs 7th. **** things gotta be around idle anyway.

It's not a sequential 10-speed; it uses different gear sets at different times to maximize fuel economy and, I would assume, performance. There's extra weight, but everything is a trade-off.
