Mustang AND iron horse

In addition to loving Mustangs I also love trains, especially old trains. I found this photo on a railroad photo site and just couldn't resist posting the link here. Check out the Mustang pacing that beautiful, old iron horse.

That is really cool. I'm a railroad buff myself, one of the things I have hanging on my house wall is a map of the interconnecting railroads and the companies that owned them on 1 Sep 96 (when my wife got me the map). The "old west" is often characterized by the types of train engines you see in movies and that's where most of their popularity came from. Those monster 2-8-2's and 4-6's are some awesome engines and it's fun to watch them run.

I'm surprised there aren't more stories from hollywood about the railroads, the companies and the process of expanding the country in what was then a very, very short amount of time. All kinds of graft, greed, robber-barons, political intrigue, monopolization, vertical integration, anti-trust establishment and resulting legislation...just the story of the Southern Pacific alone is a really engaging saga.

We also enjoy the trains very much. Every trip we take out west seems to include train pictures.

If you ever get to New Mexico you should not miss the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad. They do a day trip up into Colorado and back. Magical.

This spring on our National Parks driving tour we hope to take in a re-enactment of the driving of the golden spike in Utah.
