So... you didn't get that he wasn't talking about the Special Edition mustang that ford put out twice. He was talking about the MOVIE BULLITT that was starring Steve McQueen. You see the movie was the inspiration for the car... Reading is fundaMENTAL!!!

You're right, it is. Now go reread the only post I posted in response to his statement on the movie bullitt having contributed more to the mustang than Carroll Shelby.
My other posts weren't directed to him, but rather the remade bullitt (which is crap)
I would never call the classic mustang used in bullitt crap, but that might be because I think the 05-09 mustang has a lot a crappy features.

There are certainly some famous Mustangs - typically movie Mustangs. McQueen's '68 Mustang from the movie Bullitt is a popular choice, but the yellow '73 Mach 1 (Eleanor) from the original movie Gone in 60 Seconds is arguably a better chase scene. And younger generations have been gaga for the dark gray "Eleanor" from the remake of Gone in 60 Seconds that starred Nicolas Cage.
For me, personally, the holy grail of Mustangs has always been the 1969 Mach 1 428 SCJ. I've owned 2 Mach 1's, but never the "real deal" '69 SCJ. And the Tasca '68 Cobra Jets are also up there on my all time favorite Mustangs list.
With nearly 10 million Mustangs produced over the last 48 years, there have just been too many great ones to single out just one that's "best."

I saw the Movie for the first time about 5 years ago. I'll say, its not that great of a movie (for today's standards), but for its time, I can imagine it was top notch action.
I think the popularity of the original bullitt movie car has a lot do do with the elusiveness that precedes it. We only care because we don't know where it is. If it had been sitting in a museum and viewed for the past 40 years, I don't think we would care nearly as much. Its the mystery that captivates us, not necessarily the car.

My opinion goes like this. Bullitt (the movie) came out about 7 years before I was born. I don't think I have ever seen the movie. My love for Mustangs developed in the early 90's with the Foxbody's. It wasn't till the Bullitt was remade that I really found out about the movie at all. To me the Shelby name and car is much more famous than the Bullitt. Carrol Shelby has been around the Mustang since the beginning more or less. The Bullitt (name) was a product of Hollywood. The car itself was awesome. But any fame was created by Hollywood for a movie. Shelby stands for performance. Shelby has a history almost as long as the Mustang itself.
Having the one and only Bullitt car would be awesome. Just like having one of the first Super Snakes ever produced. You can't have the very first since it was destroyed in an accident. But if you did it would be more or less priceless. Still if I had my choice, I would take the Shelby any day. Especially an original 68' GT500KR. Anytime I have talked with Mustang fans the Bullitt is hardly ever mentioned but almost everyone, Fanatic or Novice knows the name Shelby.

And I LOVE how the 08/09 Bullitt captures both the mellow burble of the 68, and at higher rpm's, the GT40 dubbed when chasing the Charger! It's awesome!

Thats a hard statement to Make ... Bullitt brought the Mustang into widspread attention while Shelby gave the Mustang the performance image it has today.

Don't worry Mark - this is otherwise a great and friendly forum.
As far as a famous car, I'd have to say Bullitt for the older generations and probably 'Eleanor' for the younger crowd. The Mustang doesn't really have a "KITT" or a "General Lee."
I think that a red '65 vert is probably the most iconic Mustang image.

The chase scene in Bullitt is one of my favorites at over 6 min long. If you watch it you can here Steve double clutching on the highway right after he spins out. The original Gone in 60 Seconds is also a great chase scene at about 20 min. But to be honest anytime I see a Stang in a movie I perk up a little. I Am Legend with the supercharger on that GT 500 winding up. Just about any Stang in a movie works for me and has for a long time. That's why I own one.
