K & N Air Filter vs. Cold Air Intake

K & N Air Filter vs. Cold Air Intake
I saw a youtube video awhile back and I think it was a SS Camaro or a Mustang GT that installed a K&N Airfilter and picked up 9 horsepower on the dyno but ive also heard that a K&N does nothing for performance.
So my questions is, is that true and what kind of HP can someone expect to pickup on a 2013 5.0 with a K&N or a Cold Air intake?

I've heard from a couple sources that the k&n drop in actually loses power somehow; also the intake without a good tune isn't gonna do much, nice sound though

I went with a C&L no tune intake for now, You can always take out the spacer if you want a tune later. $280 direct.

Not to mention I have one on my car and it increased my fuel mileage by 1MPG after a couple of weeks of use. Not much of an increase, but I've never heard of a mod that reduces power while increasing fuel mileage.
More than likely either the people who claimed the drop in power didn't know what they were talking about, or they compared it to a paper filter without giving the ECU time to adjust to the different air flow and were running the engine lean with the K&N.
I wouldn't expect an increase in power without a tune regardless of the air filter used. Maybe a couple of HP increase, but nothing significant or particularly noticeable. Without the tune you're still limited to operating within the parameters set by the ECU. The change from Regular to Premium Unleaded will make a bigger difference than a CAI without a tune.

2013 Mustang Boss 302 - Jay Leno's Garage Mustang Chief Engineer Dave Pericak gives a detailed walk around and talks about the CAI on the Mustang. This why I haven't switched.

The stock box isn't bad, I just noticed on removal it had 2-3 chambers along the bottom. Not sure what their purpose was besides catching air, seems like a straight thru tube would be a better solution. Plus a CAI sounds dirty through our hood vents, can't imagine how loud a blower would be through them

Actually I did specifically answer the question. Without a tune do not expect any measurable increase in HP regardless of the intake used. Without a tune you're going to be limited to the confines of the small range of adjustments the ECU can make, and that's only going to add up to 2-3HP at best.
