How long should water pump last?

Just curious. I think my water pump is squealing and causing me to lose my mind. I'm not sure but when I start my car it's like it will squeal until my car warms up. sometimes it takes even longer.

I can't speak for Fords, but our '93 Honda Accord service schedule called for the timing belt and water pump (they were done at the same time) to be replaced every 90K miles.

maybe just your idler pulley. I have heard of that going bad more than water pumps going bad at least on our cars.

I'm with Glenn dig further most of the time a wp will weep when going out not to say the bearing cannot fail but it sounds more like what an idler or tensioner pulley may do.

if you can get a long screw driver or piece or wooden doll pin/toliet plunger handle and stick the big end up to your ear and poke around in there touching the different things wile the engine is running you should be able to narrow it down the the bad part. of course be carefull not to touch any moving belts or pillies <------ just had to say it

I did that with a piece of hose & seems to be the water pump. Maybe I need to do it with a screw driver

You will know when the water pumps going bad. It will be leaking. They are designed to leak when worn.. so you know to replace it

Sounds more like power steering.

I agree that usually water pumps leak before failing.
