I own a Mustang., I thought to be a 1964.5., but could be 65., it has a 3 speed on floor., 6 cyl.., (not for sale either)..does anyone know how to tell the difference it is my first old car I have ever owned too. I am not a car buff so that is why I have this question-- the internet does not clearly have this answer.

 

64 1/2 didn't come with chrome inserts in the side panel trim. 65 did and 66 had the fancier ones.

Note: many changes came before the cut off date for 64.5 production (Sometime in early August, 1964.) and many came well into the regular 65 production.

Ford did have a shutdown period for retooling of the Mustang lines in early August, 1964. This is when the switch from generators to alternators was made. When they started back up, the VIN numbers were rounded up to 5FXXX250001 at Dearborn, and 5RXXX125001 at San Jose. To those of us in the hobby, this is the point when the 64.5's ended and the 65's started.

For the purposes of this list, the early version of a difference will be called "64.5" and the later version will be called "65". This does not mean the the items were only found on pre-shutdown or post-shutdown cars. There was a lot of overlap before and after the shutdown.

You can do a search on google for the mustang vin decoder..vin number is stamped on left fender inside the hood and also on the driver door..you input the vin and the decoder breaks it down to the options the car came with like color, interior color, motor,tranny, etc..and it tells you the actual build date..that's how I found out my 65 was built September 8 1964.

 

It's a 1965, no such thing as a 64 1/2
