The 5.0 Coyote V8 engines are very popular swap options.. Therefore, I'd look into Coyote engines that were originally in F-150 trucks or first and second generation Coyote 5.0 4v Mustang engines.
Also consider searching the sub-forums by selecting the search function drop down menu and then type in Coyote engine swaps.. Meanwhile, hope the info provided is useful, and also welcome aboard..

, Sounds like it is fixable and probably way less money to have a good mechanic take a look and find the exact problem. Then you can make a decision on the route to take. An engine swap to dissimilar engines is a big expense and a lot of work and time. Unless it is done by an experienced person or a very particular and detailed person, the outcome can be very disappointing. I would look into a replacement vehicle with a factory V8, unless you just can't part with the '04 you have.

Yep, what they all say. Converting the 04 from v6 to v8, which will still be under all the inspection rules such as safety and emissions if applicable in your area, may not make it pass anymore. Further, converting the v6 to a v8 is more than just the engine swap, it's computer, programming, exhaust, transmission, mounts, suspension, brakes, wiring, etc, ad nauseam... it's not an easy chore to be sure. Heck may even be the A/C system has parts that need to be swapped out too for all I know... Ford did what it did for costs, not ease of things. Pretty sure the compressor at least is a cost add to the thing...
So the *proper* fix is to fix the V6, even with swapping it out for another V6 engine of same-ish year and be done with it as the only thing you'll be swapping is the long block and nothing else. And if the excuse is to get a V8, then the proper fix overall is to fix this one, or not, sell it, and get the V8 version of Mustang you always wanted in the first place.
Thankfully if it's rockers or lifters, that's easy, pull the valve covers and get to swapping those out. It's a pushrod engine, either 3.8 or 3.9, so that's a very easy fix, just get to swappin' them out. Of course, tapping could be injectors, or it could be more insidious... like crank or rod bearings, wrist pins... As suggested up there, probably a great idea to actually pay a good mechanic for a diagnostic if not just let them fix it if you don't want to/can't/won't.
Good luck and welcome to the forums!

As mentioned above, if the tapping noises are your only concern, then I would most definitely follow the advice provided by having your V6 engine repaired over replacing it with an engine swap.
