I decided to create another. This one is much shorter so feel free to add suggestions.

George's laws of mechanical repair.


1) As soon as your hands are covered in grease, your nose will start to itch.
2) If your nose does not start to itch, you will have to pee really bad.
3) Just as you start a repair that will involve at least 45 minutes of attention, your wife will call you in for lunch or dinner.
4) The part you pick up at the auto supply will always be the incorrect size....
5) When getting parts for your repair, it will always be necessary to make a second or even third trip.
6) Your new parts will require a new type of tool to install.
7) The new part will never be on sale.
8) After you take 4 hours making a repair, your friend will show up and tell you how you could have done it in 15 minutes.
9) Automatic break bleeders never work and will require you to spend at least 45 minutes looking for someone to help you bleed your breaks.
10) When you friend says he will swing by to help with the repair, he will arrive 3 hours late and after you have completed the task. He will then stand around drinking your beer, telling you that you should have waited for him and criticizing your work.
11) If a spring is involved, it will be shot across the lawn and always at dusk.

But I would like to elaborate on #11

Should read, " you will drop a small nut, washer, spring, etc and it is lost forever"

I'd like to add to this. True story, I was working on an old tractor and I removed a plug, this tractor had sat for over 20 years and I thought a gallon would come out but it was much, much more. I had to stick my thumb in with one hand to stem the flow and phone my wife from the garage. Well she did not answer, so two calls later she did. I had to ask her to bring a bigger bucket. Well ten minutes later she shows up and wants to know why I interrupted her. I set the bucket out and pulled my thumb out but she was not impressed. :-)

 

Thanks for the synopsis. I always thought it was just me........Just one thing I would add. If your shop is in your basement, get ready for a great cardio workout. Because no matter how much thought you put into the repair, you gonna make many many trips up and down the steps. Welcome to the forum.

 

Yup. Never had the luxury of working in a garage. Always a gravel driveway so I put a piece of plywood underneath to catch any nuts, washers... they always bounce off into the dirt. lol

 

HAHAHA, #11, every time...

 

For me it's is for sure #3

 

#12: It is a lousy $4 part that fails, but in order to get to it you have to do 5 to 6 hours worth of disassembly to get to it.

#13: When you get the part and install it, you realize that you have a few bolts missing or the one tool you need to reassemble has been borrowed or misplaced.

#14: You have to put up with your wife/lover/significant other telling you "See, I told you so. you should have brought it to a real mechanic!"
