Forged Crank, Forged Rods, Cast Pistons -- Wait, WHAT?!

In the Coyote engine, the crank and connecting rods are all forged, but the pistons are cast. But don't worry, there's a reason for that.

5.0 Coyote motor has had forged crank and rods since it's introduction in 2011...this is not new for 2015. Many 'experts' also say that forged pistons have more NVH for daily driving, and thus, have little advantage in a street car.
True, powered metal rods are forgings, but certainly not in the traditional sense of the word. I am not saying that they are "bad", but they certainly aren't as strong as a traditional/conventionally forged one either. Ford certainly understands this as well as anyone since they use Manley conventionally forged rods & pistons in the Aluminator crate engines. Hypereutectic pistons have been used both in the hot rod industry and by the OEMs for some time now. Whether or not they are stronger than a conventionally cast piston depends on how you define stronger. They are definitely harder and wear better, but hard also means somewhat more brittle as well. Besides being quieter than forged pistons due to their ability to run with tighter piston to wall clearances they also rock less in the bores for the same reason and this makes for better ring/oil control.
